Xiaomi has just announced that its first foldable flip phone, the Mix Flip, will soon see a global launch, right as the company has briefly overtaken Apple as the world’s second-largest smartphone maker.
A global launch for the Xiaomi Mix Flip means the device will make its way to markets outside of China, such as countries in Europe. A US launch is not expected.
Not much of a global launch then
The US is a single country. Europe is a continent with 50+ countries. Whether or not the phone releases in a single country does not determine how “global” the launch is.
The US is quite a large country though… Approximately the size and population of all European countries combined. Calling it a continent wouldn’t be too far off
Well, it’s similar to how American bands go on a “World tour” which includes 30 US cities and maybe London and Paris, if they have a good day.
Not to be sarcastic, but ‘global’, ‘world’ and similar terms seem to be in the eye of the beholder. 🤨
Na that’s just plain old lying
Did they fix the screen crease? If not, then this release is irrelevant, as it brings nothing new to the table.
Edit: I really hope SOMEONE figures out the screen crease, because the concept of foldable phones is amazing. Just, poorly executed currently.
The screen crease is barely noticeable on newer flip foldables. This is one of those issues that people who have never owned a flip foldable think is a massive issue, but in reality it is something you very quickly adjust to and ignore. It is similar to the camera notch, except the camera notch is always visible whereas the screen crease is impossible to see in certain conditions (darker lighting, darker themes, etc).
I’ve used them. The crease is not unnoticeable. Sure, you may forget it’s there after a while, but it is still there. And that’s not what I was talking about. Specifically, the delamination that tends to occur after extended use. That’s the issue they need to figure out. And to your camera point: my phone has a cutout, and I hate it. It always gets in the way. Yes, I get used to it, but it’s there, and it blocks a small part of the screen.
My point with all of this, is not that these folding phones suck and shouldn’t be made just because it has a crease. I hate the notch. I can’t stand the crease. This doesn’t mean they bother you. My point, however, is that unless this is actually new, it’s not new and is, therefore, irrelevant.
Edit: as an aside, I’ve owned a Xiaomi, and it was the worst phone I have ever used. Actually, it was awesome for about 5 months, then started degrading, then turned itself off randomly after the 6-month time. I had to replace it after 6 months. To give perspective, I keep phones for years. The phone before that Xiaomi lasted 5 years, before it started having battery issues.
I’ve used them.
Modern flip foldables? Like 2023/24 releases? The razr 40 was a massive improvement in terms of the crease and all flips released since seem to have caught up.
Unfortunately, no. The last one I’ve used was last year’s Samsung flip. Z Flip 5, I think. I really want to try the Razr 40, though, and the Pixel Fold.
