Truly, who could have seen this coming?

That was fantastic
Thank you I was very lost lmao

I wish they talked a bit more about actual design aspects of the distro 😅
It sounds like it might be up my alley, but it doesnt feel like I actually learned a whole lot

He’s not running for reelection so he’s kinda free to do whatever he likes until he’s replaced. I’m from NC and I don’t like or respect the man but I appreciate that at least when nothing is on the line he’ll speak truth to power. He has been very critical of trump if I remember right

Yeah, I have ADHD and accurate time estimations for how long it’ll get places inclidimg traffic are REALLY important to me because my brain can’t process how long it takes to do things and time manage the way other people can
Sometimes you have needs that aren’t totally met by the open source or free license option, and thats okay :)
Hopefully over time it can get better and better, which is why I still like contributing with street complete. Only time will tell if osm will end up working out adequately for me, but if it doesn’t work for your needs, that’s alright! Maybe in the future it’ll be able to :)

Gotcha, I’d not heard of it! I’ll have to try it out sometime
Hope you have a lovely day ☺️

Yes, you can, but if every time you have to go somewhere new its not there its not really serving very well as your GPS, especially if you really need your GPS on a regular basis. At a minimum that means you need two GPS apps
I really enjoy adding stuff with street complete and wanna get more in the habit of it for anywhere I go regularly, but if someone needs to be able to get places and osm doesnt have the data they need, its totally reasonable for them to use a different gps- open street maps can’t get them where they need to go, so theyre gonna need a different one
Personally I think if someone’s needs are simply not met by the open source tool it is okay for them to look for something that will, even if the open source/free licence thing would be better in terms of freedoms

Thanks for sharing your experience, thats super helpful! I’m curious what navigation app you’re liking, I’m currently still using google maps and occasionally trialing foss osm maps, but I’m not sure if they’ll adequately fill my needs.
Yeah having to use a pixel is a bummer, I have weird hardware preferences and would really love to have more options but understand why thats not possible. I just dont love what google offers and some of the things I’d loose out on vs more niche options
I hope graphene continues to work well for you! ☺️

They may mean that open street maps doesnt have adequate data for their area, in which case those options are unlikely to help
Thanks, this is a succinct and helpful explanation :)

It feels like a very smart rebrand but someone who sells racism and hatred doesnt get to double back and try economic populism instead just cause they think it might be a more winning strategy.
She can get bent.

Nice, how’s it treating you? Run into any issues?
I hope graphene serves you well, maybe someday I’ll make the switch as well :)
I think that’s a pretty big assumption, I think if you asked most engineers what ux research says about most design patterns they wouldn’t know, and theyd have to go and research stuff most designers could tell you off the batt
The three mile island catastrophe was largely a UI design problem that happened because they failed to consider a human had to operate and respond to the problems presented by the control room’s interface. Engineers were involved in the project, I don’t believe designers were.
At the end of the day we both want the same thing. But I feel user hostile design patterns are as much implemented by engineers chasing costs as demanded by management as they are by designers making things shiner for marketing (like massive car touch screens, which are much cheaper to manufacture than proper physical controls, and literally any designer could tell you as soon as proposed that thats gonna kill people), and I guarantee you, both would jump at the chance to make something they think is actually just a good thing without someone over them ruining everything about it
No one goes to school excited to produce a return on investment to shareholders, be it engineering school or design school
Regardless, I hope you have a nice day :) hopefully we get our not-shitty car someday, and if not I’m just buying an old car

As someone who struggles to manage mental illness, yeah people have become really knee jerk opposed to lifestyle change approaches to managing mental health. The research is really unambiguous. In DBT they teach you to exercise as part of the PLEASE skill for attending to your physical wellbeing, because its hard to be mentally alright if you feel like crap physically
Moving won’t fix your mental health, but your mental health is unlikely to improve if you dont go physically move, its a really important part of taking care of your body
That being said, how you deliver a message has a huge bearing on whether its receieved, and the reason your message is one people are guarded against is because people constantly talk down to mentally ill folks and tell them how to “solve” their issues from a place of presumption. As a part of that, people frequently present exercise as a cure, and as someone who exercises every day it very much is not. Empathizing with that is worthwhile, as invalidating people also promotes poor mental health outcomes :)

It’s no freaking wonder that the Swiss government was like “yo, maybe pass.”
Fucking lmao
Whole article is a very fun read. I was expecting palantir was suing for like defamation or something, but it might actually be dumber than that
I mean designers would also be important in that equation, the problem is just that design has been cannibalized by marketing and branding
But like, where an engineer solves physics problems (and software developers solve logic problems), designers solve human problems. So ergonomics, intuitive controls, a design that has useful features for basic tasks and makes sense for daily life, that communicates saftey information in an effective and clear way, and accessibility, are all things a designer would be more suited to than an engineer
Unfortunately companies are increasingly corrupting the role of designers from “being the advocate of the end user” to being another bs marketing person who does whatever will look shiny and sell more units, while ignoring stuff that actually matters.
But design is also deeply important to building a thing that is well considered and doesnt suck

I definitely agree with asking questions first. I’ve tried to open by explaining how I see things in an effort to get folks to open up and share how they see them, and people are so used to that being an attempt to tell them to think something different they can kinda shut down and get defensive even just from that
Try to get them talking and engage with them sincerely. If we want to fix the problems we have to do the work to build a bigger coalition

The agency has since apologized and says it’s trying to fix the problem.
Something about “says it’s trying to fix the problem” is really funny to me 😭
I kinda hate where I am, its just comfortable- I’m kinda terrified years will pass and I’ll still be stuck in the same place, like I was years previous.
I think it can be scary, depending on what staying the same looks like
