I played Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 4 and Starfield at or very shortly after launch. You are exaggerating to a ridiculous degree. None of them were even remotely unplayable - and there has also been a significant increase in quality with each title. Each of them was more stable and had fewer glitches and game-breaking bugs than the previous title at launch.

FTL: Faster Than Light is consuming any moment of free time I have right now, this time with the Multiverse mod. The base game is already quite challenging, the Captain’s Edition Mod I was playing the last time around is several times harder, but this is once again even more demanding on the player.

The amount of variety and quality of the ships is immense, with some of them being so different from what is the norm in the game that they almost feel like games of their own. Unlocking a new ship is an occasion and you never know what you’re getting into. This inevitably leads to the game being unbalanced though, but I feel like this is intentional; certain ships are definitely designed to be especially challenging. Similarly, there are new items that can totally transform existing ships.

Even after dozens and dozens of hours with this mod, it’s constantly throwing new curveballs at me in the form of radically new encounters and insane story ideas. While the writing is often more than overly wordy and self-indulgent (it takes one to know one), there is a wicked sense of humor underneath, even if it can be crude at times. It could do with an editor or ten reigning in the writers though.

Still, I can’t recommend it enough to veteran players of the game looking for an actual challenge after having learned to blaze through the base game and less difficult mods - although chances are, if you’re a veteran FTL captain, you’ve likely already played this mod anyway. I’m just late to the party.

It’s a good game. Definitely overly hated among outrage-hungry “gamers”. Lovely worldbuilding, excellent quests and random encounters, fun combat. Looks great too apart from characters and facial animations. It’s cozy sci-fi, quite different from the usual cynicism and darkness that is so overwhelming now in gaming.

With warehouse and oil infrastructure strikes - as well as fuel and goods shortages - the war is also present in cities. Recruitment posters and aggressive military propaganda are everywhere even in St. Petersburg and Moscow - and signup bonuses are much higher the wealthier a city is in order for this incentive to be effective everywhere. Universities, schools and workplaces are aggressively recruiting people of all ages and genders based on ever increasing recruitment quotas, often pressuring members of vulnerable groups into signing up - or by simply signing them up without their knowledge. Students can’t even retake university exams without “volunteering” for the military anymore.

Urbanites are not safe anymore.

Naturally, military contracts are a scam: People are being promised positions in the rear, extensive training and limited contracts, but even university graduates are being sent to meatwave squadrons instead of the promised headquarters or drone units and contracts are routinely extended by the military every year. Meanwhile, unit commanders force fresh recruits to hand over their signup bonuses in order to not be tortured, killed or sent on suicide missions. As soon as they run out of money, they’ve lost their usefulness and are sent out to die. Ukrainian drone kill cams are showing just as many young, fit Slavic men (and even increasingly women) as the older men and minorities that used to make up a much larger part of the cannon fodder. That’s on top of the abhorrent institutionalized hazing (involving often deadly abuse and rape) the Russian military has been notorious for for centuries.

There is no widespread migration of desktop users from Windows to Linux and I doubt there ever will be. Can we finally bury this delusional idea? It’s far more likely that the desktop PC dies almost completely as a device category used by anyone but professionals and a tiny minority of enthusiasts than for this to happen.
