Not rain, no. The wood is new, it’s treated and it’s slightly corrugated. The old boardwalk’s wood was smooth as a baby’s bottom after 40 years outside, and slightly covered in moss that would turn slimy in the rain - which is half the reason I replaced it: it tried to kill me once too often 🙂

As for snow, it’s not slippery as long as it’s dry. Once it’s wet and melty, everything is slippery 🙂

There is no tide here. There is no current. The water level is constant. Because it’s not a real lake: it’s a swamp that has been dredged out to prevent mosquito infestation. There’s a 10-acre buffer zone upstream that prevents silt from the catchment area from filling the lake back up, and there’s a dam downstream to control the lake level. That’s so the entire goddamn area isn’t filled with mosquitoes.

It’s not a real lake! All the lakefronts around it are artificial.

We only have one house 🙂 The second building is a summer cottage - with a sauna but no running water and no toilets, and it’s not really livable in the winter. This is quite typical here in the north.

What’s more unusual is that it is rather large: that’s because the family who owned this place before us first built the cottage to spend the summer holidays when they lived far away (so it has bedrooms and a living room to stay in it for a week or two), then they moved here and built the main house on the same plot of land.

We got lucky, we got this place for very cheap.

My best years were between 40 and 47: my body was still mostly problem free, I was already financially secure, and I had enough life experience to know stupid when I saw it.

Then at 47, the progressives came onto the scene. Then shortly after, the small aches in the morning for no reason. Then I started to get a gloved finger up my ass on a regular basis to check my prostate…

That’s also when I realized aging comes in bursts, and my first big burst was around that time - just before 50 - and it fucking sucked. That’s the first time I felt limited in some of the things I did before, and that’s the first time I felt on the decline for real.

If you’re 40, enjoy it bubba, because it’ll be over before you know it.

Considering how much I pay for gas lately, I’d say I live in the part of Europe the US fucked up - also called “the world”.

I don’t deny that their lives are hard. Hell, I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes. I’m even willing to admit those my age had it easiER (not easy per se, but we certainly had opportunities they’ll never have).

What I take exception with is their implicit idea that we now prevent them from having the same things we had on purpose.

Fuck that! I worked hard and played the game, I feel I’ve won the game after 40 years on the job, and it’s not my fault if the game is now rigged and unwinnable for today’s generations. Go blame the fossils on Capitol Hill with millions in their bank accounts making self-serving laws, not middle-class me who managed to buy his house and who’s looking forward to some sort of retirement.

I’m old enough to be regularly insulted by people who believe all generations before them had it easy and are now hell-bent on making their lives miserable.
