Ultimately its whatever you want, bro, I can only say what worked for me. Autoglass was backbreaking work, and seeing the kinds of money that changed hands showed me how much of a shitshow capitalism is. That being said, work was regular, full time outside of December to February (and a fuckton of of from may to September, there wasn’t a year I didn’t average over 40 a week is what I’m saying), paid well enough, and beyond showing up and jumping when they said to, I was on the road by myself all but maybe half an hour of the day. I could ride around, organize my thoughts, actually plan a next step in life. I’d never say it wasn’t backbreaking. There were many days, especially in the summer, where heat exhaustion was just a state of being for weeks at a time. It was not safe work, and while it could be rewarding, oftentimes it wasn’t. Oftentimes it was demeaning, being told to try to sell fucking wipers to people. But that is all true for most jobs in America, unfair or not. What safelite did give me was time and space to work through my issues, heal mentally as best anyone can under capitalism, and plan. That planning got me to go to trident for their 1 year free tuition and get my associates, which at least got me a job in the ac where I also wasn’t wondering who I gotta not pay to make rent. I’m not gonna pretend that this is the be-all end-all of security, but its nowhere near demeaning compared to jobs I had. And as much as I hate safelite, and I do fucking hate slavelite, I don’t know many jobs in that economic position where I would have been able to eventually move up and out of chs.

And if that ain’t up your alley, see if you can make it to Clements ferry and get a job with Anheuser Bush. I know a guy who had a lot of luck with that, eventually becoming a delivery guy around town. Still shit work, but gave a lot of the same freedom. Plus they train you to drive, so they might help with a general license.

  • Sc, 2k a month, 14 an hour at a gas station, bro just say Charleston. I’ve been where you are. Honest advice, unless you have some skillset, get your license and find a way to Palmetto parkway and go work for safelite. I’m not defending that company: Safelite is a shit-fucking monopoly that will kill your fucking soul, and honestly open you up to realities of capitalism that you could only have nightmares about. But they pay decently well and give you a car to drive. From there you have a job, a way to get around (if you’re smart with how you do so), and enough money to maybe save something. Not enough to be safe or happy, but enough to plan for your next steps after that.

  • I mean but then that’s social media. Again, like this post, how many guys posting are posting made up bullshit for engagement? How many girls are giving “tips,” again for engagement? None of this is guaranteed to be real. The data stands, however: Per NBC polling, 44% of people think whoever makes more should pay, regardless of gender. 36% think it should be split, regardless of any factors. Only 20%, half of any other response, thinks it should be the one who asked (which is usually in straight relationships the man). I’m sorry, but all of this is at best a shitty date, and yet is at worst fuel for the fucking mgtow incel crowd.

  • This is what grinds my gears. At no point (if this is real) did she ask them to pay for the friend. But because of their own misogyny, they’re being an ass. And that’s not even getting into the probability that his is ALL ragebait to play off misogyny for engagement. People getting pissed off making shit up in their head, then making others suffer for it.

  • Idk. Look, fuck Israel, and I’m proud of these kids for standing up and saying no. But I also have to be true to my life experiences. Either northwestern caves, and I fucking hope they do (please email ug-admission@northwestern.edu, call 847-491-7271, anything to actively pressure them), or these kids are in for a world of shit. Non-college-educated jobs are fucking dystopian. I went to school in my early 30s, and even if I can argue for better working conditions for ALL workers, Jesus Christ my jobs before going back were in retrospect fucking insanely cruel and demeaning. And I promise you, one day protesting this genocide will be like remote work: Allowed and celebrated in white collar jobs, while a fucking joke elsewhere. I get that we all should be willing to give anything to stand up for what’s right. It just always breaks my heart when that cost is borne by kids.

  • Vague complaints about “Rust evangelism”

Just adding some clarity for anyone who comes by. Just like any other community, you have Rust, Rust devs, the Rust dev community, the Rust dev community social media pages, and then the public perception of those social media pages, typically driven by clickbait “articles” about errant Reddit posts. There was a fair bit of hype at one point for Rust, and given its similar applications as C++, hype around “converting” people. This became a meme a decade ago, which like all memes just became tired thought-terminating slop. Which is how it ended up with Phoronix, but still.
