To each their own, that’s the reason I don’t play Solitaire physically and play it digitally I hate spending 5-10 minutes on a game just to find out that I can’t beat it. There’s no sense of satisfaction for me

Work Reform@lemmy.world•Ohio Governor vetoes bill allowing workers under 16 to work until 9 p.m. during school yearEnglish
7·2 days agogood, that mindset is crazy. How is someone supposed to be able to get up at 5/6 AM, go to school, get out around 2/3Pm, work until 9 and then somehow also be able to work on homework/projects while not sacrificing sleep, just to do it the next day.
for perspective even working until 7PM which is it’s current setup only gives a 10 hour window between shifts so you better hope homework and studying doesn’t take more than an hour or so.
When the leading argument for the change is “this will help current workforce needs” it’s clear student’s aren’t the intended benefactor here. It’s sacrificing future employee skills for short term benefits.
I just went through the hassle of putting a PXE server on my main server. I put boot repair disc, Debian live, a few installers and I just remembered I need to throw clonezilla on it.
I always end up losing my USBs and I just lost my primary OS USB and had to re-download all my isos so I figured enough is enough.

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK that Apple makes millions of dollars with personalized advertising. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you should turn it off.English
51·6 days agoI don’t agree with this. While they have stated its against their stores policies to use permanent identifiers instead of your IDFA, I haven’t seen any stories of them actually enforcing said restriction. I’ve seen a lot of /them/ saying that they will and do, but I’ve never seen a story of a company saying they were disabled for it.
On top of that, they didn’t forbid companies from using workarounds like a unique device fingerprint using your current device configuration for it either, so many apps just did that instead, which brought everyone back to square one again, they just switched to using a third party to identify the device instead of using apple’s first party solution.
Privacy advocates actually warned that apples way of marketing this feature would do exactly what is occurring here. Giving users a false sense of privacy when really very little has changed.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is your response to people saying "data privacy doesn't matter because it's all out there anyway"?English
7·6 days agoI don’t push it. It’s their life and if privacy isn’t a value to them nothing I say is going to change that. I might mention the amount of data collected but that’s generally public knowledge anyway. Some people just don’t care if a company that they use has the data.
“I value my privacy more than you, there is nothing more to it” is a more than adequate statement.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is your response to people saying "data privacy doesn't matter because it's all out there anyway"?English
7·6 days agoNot that I disagree with the general mindset but, this isn’t a valid comparison because its unequal. It’s misinterpreting what those people are saying. There is a difference between giving your landlord a spare key and hanging that spare key on the community bulletin board.
What people really mean when they say “it’s already out there” is that people with the skillset or job to obtain the data have the ability to, not that the everyday person has the ability to. It’s not unknown the information is already out there, but that doesn’t mean that you would want to just publicly disclose the info.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do you decide what to buy online without being basically scammed?English

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do you decide what to buy online without being basically scammed?English
4·7 days agoI just look at reviews and history from sites I trust. I know that most third party sell companies like ebay are very buyer friendly, and if that fails my credit card has basic fraud features so worst case scenario I issue a chargeback.
Basically:
- if the site has price history or a way to see recently sold item prices, enable it to get a general idea of what is considered a fair price
- don’t buy off a seller with bad reviews or very little reviews (sorry to new sellers thats just how it is)
- use a payment method that will have your back if you get scammed (i.e NOT any type of crypto currency, pay in cash services like money network or paypal family, checks, etc)
- be proactive, keep track of the shipping info, don’t be afraid to reach out to the seller or in best case the websites support if something seems fishy
I bought an ice machine off Ebay a few months back, the seller had listed it in CAD, imagine my surprise when I got a chinese shipping agency tracking number and even more curious was that the package weighed less than 1 oz. I decided to wait just in case it was a mistake, I kept watching that tracking number, it kept bouncing back and forth between the same 4 locations for about 3 weeks before I reached out to Ebay and explained the situation. I never even bothered reaching out to the seller, Ebay immediatly refunded my money and within a day or two both the product and the seller page didn’t exist anymore.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•No Black Friday deal for loyal/previous customersEnglish
2·10 days agoFrom a company POV it’s probally meant to try and encourage you to let a friend know, but it seems that the page in this case might change upon login because it says to sign in to see your deals if you are an existing member. I don’t have it though so I can’t confirm that so I’m running off assumptions based off what the “eligibility” area says

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•No Black Friday deal for loyal/previous customersEnglish
6·10 days agomaybe they updated it, for me it says first 12 months and then specifies “new customers only” under the “who’s eligible for this plan” section on the deal page. It also doesn’t give a link to login anymore and informs existing customers to sign in to see their own specialized deal

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Plex is now enforcing remote play restrictions on TVsEnglish
6·10 days agoI’m just chiming in to say that while the documentation gives you information on how to do external access, there are multiple issues open on the github about unauthenticated endpoints that if you know what is on the server already, you can confirm that it’s there
So I wouldn’t use a standard naming convention because using that knowledge, someone who cares could use common names that could be on the server, followed by common standards of formats they would be in, and be able to confirm it’s their via the end points.

Games@sh.itjust.works•"It's extremely frustrating and also f*cked up" - one of the world's best indie studios is facing shock closure following confounding Steam banEnglish
2·11 days agoFirmly agree, I think their primary issue is it’s hard to find a game that they refuse that would be a decent game to back that type of cause. This is just due to the nature of the games that get rejected on Steam. They’re the controversial leaning style games.
This one in particular for sure isn’t a good choice, because of the underage controversy but, all of these style games are also going to have a pretty vocal and not so small group against this type of effort.

Games@sh.itjust.works•"It's extremely frustrating and also f*cked up" - one of the world's best indie studios is facing shock closure following confounding Steam banEnglish
219·12 days agoI have to disagree to be honest. Not because I think that they should allow a naked guy with a young girl(gross), but because in the time that it took for steam to review the game and give a verdict, they had already changed it on their own to be a different model.
For them to refuse re-submission of the game is pretty dumb, considering that the offending content(if that is what it was) had already been fixed in the release build and steam was operating under old information.
If they haden’t already changed it for the release candidate I would be fully on board, but clearly they saw wrong in it as well which was why they had changed it prior to steams decision.
Steam forced an early release build of the game way earlier than they normally asked for, which meant it was exactly that, a pre-release build, meaning it had not gone through the proper channels for vetting or checking to make sure that what they wanted to publish was a final product. Then when requested for a review of the actual final build, steam refused. This combined with the fact that the only storefront that blocked the release was steam, I definitely think steam is the bad guy here.
BEING SAID, this might not be the reason anyway, reading the struggles of this games development process, steam had already posted concern about the live action portions of the game, so I’m expecting it might have been a combination of the nudity aspect of the game (even if not intended to arouse) and the live action portions. I assume steam was already looking for a reason to block this release, and when they were given one they just went with it.
omg yes, I loved when games gave a replay stories or replay core concepts section of the menu, it’s not that hard to add but it lets you recap as well!
unpausable cutscenes. Nothing bugs me more than getting interrupted in the middle of a cutscene and not being able to press escape to pause the cutscene. You’re forced to try to split your attention between what interrupted you and the cutscene or restart and see the cutscene from the beginning again.
Extra annoyance points if escape immediately skips the cutscene without any indication it’s going to.
