Usernames are not “copyrighted” across instances for very good reasons
Try to open a “dessalines” or “jordanlund” account elsewhere, you’re probably going to get questioned about it.

But yes, as I said it’s not possible to backfill the new community on Lemmy instances (on other Piefed instances, it works though)

As you said, the majority of Lemmy is probably men over 30 years old.

That might be me, but I feel like Lemmy’s general Ask communities are small/quiet enough for questions targeting a certain demographics to be asked there

Hyperbole in this context is borderline disinformation.
This filter offers a choice when the users signs up. The new joiner can enable it completely, moderately, or not at all. So in this case, it is indeed the users’ choice.

In the same way that defederation is an admin-level decision impacting all of the userbase, having those defined at an admin level seem reasonable.
