“Books were only one type of receptacle where we stored a lot of things we were afraid we might forget. There is nothing magical in them, at all. The magic is only in what books say, how they stitched the patches of the universe together into one garment for us.” Professor Faber

  • I often hear about people being loud, distracting, and using phones in theaters, but I rarely see it myself. It probably depends on what you’re going to see; when I went to see TMNT Mutant Mayhem, I went in knowing there would be kids, so I expected some chatter. When I saw Barbie a few days later, the theater was pretty quiet.

I go to the more expensive theater with big comfortable recliners now though because I can’t do cheap theater seats anymore, they are horrible for my back. Most of the movies I see are aimed at adults, so it’s probably partly the demographic.

  • I agree with most of what you’ve been saying, but I’m going to gently push back on the Mustang EV. I think it’s one of the best looking EVs out there and it would be the one that I would choose (or the Subie EV because I love my Crosstrek). I do agree that it probably should not have been called a Mustang though because it doesn’t really look like one and there’s a whole culture thing behind the Mustang.

I would be thrilled if there was a manual shift EV. I know it doesn’t make sense and I don’t care if it doesn’t really do what combustion engines do, but I loved driving stick. I was sad to give up my old stick, but I went for the car with much higher safety ratings. It doesn’t even have to be real, just give me that feeling of driving manual would be great. And with a proper stick shifter too, not the silly paddle shifters.

I’m probably going to let the 2 plants I have go to sponge. I learned about luffas because my friend gave me packs of seeds from her job that were all going to be thrown away and this was one. So far, I’ve just been throwing them in dirt and watching them grow. Last year I had one inside in an aerogarden and it was very unruly.

This is my 2nd year growing luffas and I live in a climate where I can grow them year round. This year, I am paying more attention to soil acidity and nutrients in my garden spaces so I’d like to get 4-5 pots of properly balanced soil going for them. I’ll have some to eat and some to sponge.

I love shaking all the seeds inside and crinkling the skin when it’s all dried out. It’s also fun to poke out the seeds that get stuck with a chopstick. I really like giving out the sponges to people to see what they do with them. I just find this plant really satisfying.

  • I’ve been using neem oil preventively on my tomato plants because I get nasty cases of powdery mildew on them. It’s the only thing that I’ve found that works (although open to other options). I also use I occasionally on my hydrangeas for powdery mildew. PM is the bane of my gardening.

When I use it preventively, I only spray once a week in a light mist, before the sun hits my plants, and before the bees start coming out. From what I’ve read, it’s not harmful to bees unless they are directly sprayed. I’ve been doing this for the last few weeks and the bees have been buzzing around my marigolds with no issues. If the plant has powdery mildew, I make sure to remove the affected leaves and spray directly around where the leaves were cut off.

I also use it for aphids, but not when vegetable plants are close to harvest and even then, I’ll wash the tomatoes with dawn soap when they come inside and before eating them. I have a young hibiscus that was recently planted and I give it a spritz of neem oil once or twice a week because it has aphids. It’s much smaller than the other hibiscus around it, so I’m trying to give it every chance it can have to get bigger. Netting isn’t a big option for my garden spaces except for the wheeled garden beds, which I do net when they are growing.

I had a really bad aphid infestation on my lettuce box recently. I ended up using mildly soapy water because the lettuce is meant for my bunnies and I don’t want them exposed to any pesticides. I’d rather I was exposed to it myself than my little bunny butts.
