  • I recall in the past Western nations would hold their social progress over emerging nations with an air of arrogance. But anyone who has been alive long enough understands that social progress is a function of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. When basic needs become more challenging to secure (as they have been in Canada and the US with affordability crises), social progress unfortunately takes the back burner.

Its often less about the people and more about the circumstance, though religion can be an important modifier.

Global South wouldn’t be a fair example since you’d have to factor in historical (and current) exploitation by Western nations. This tends to bolster corruption by having leaders sell out their population to align with Western prerogatives, enriching themselves in the process.

The social democracies in these nations is generally an attempt to protect the populace from Western capitalism moreso than domestic capitalism.

One example would be when the US overthrew the Shah in Iran back in the 50s because they socialized ownership of their oil reserves (previously owned through exploitation by a Western coporation). They staged a coup d’etat to install a pro Western leader so that the Western exploitation could continue. This inevitably led to the Iranian revolution, playing a significant role in Iran’s current state as a theocracy.

The Global South, particularly South America, has countless of examples of this. The term banana republic is used to describe this very situation.

This is by no means an indictment on Western culture, just that the global rich will inevitably be in a position to manipulate the global not-so-rich for their own gain. Western nations are the global bourgeoisie.

Nordic nations are a better example of social democracies as they are not subject to the same type of meddling.

Carney is essentially a conservative (except for socially) by most metrics.

He handled Trump really well in his first month but there is legitimate risk he has private (as opposed to public) interests at heart.

I guess that’s better than the alternative (Poilievre) who will undoubtedly prioritise private interests. At least there’s a chance Carney might do some good.

Hoping for a liberal minority government. Canada is very fortunate to have a third party (NDP) to keep their mainstream “progressive” party in check. We’ve seen how things have gone to shit in the US.

The US has managed to maintain disproportionate purchasing power for its size post WW2 due to trust and reliability. Purchasing power will inevitably erode as that trust diminishes and countries divest in the US.

Doesn’t mean countries will stop selling to American consumers overnight but it will happen over the next 5 to 10 years. No one wants to do business with an unreliable partner.

It would also be naive to assume Trump does not have a successor and that a significant number of the American populace don’t end up supporting him.

America has poisoned itself with its disinformation engines in the pursuit of never ending growth. Unless there is a major change in the status quo, this isn’t going to change anytime soon.

  • Literally everytime a Democrat is elected.

The deficit increased under Reagan, Bushx2 and Trump.

Its a core tenet of their playbook to drive up the deficit via tax cuts (especially for rich) and increased military spending and then scream about the deficits when Democrats are in power such that the focus shifts from improving public services (via increased government spending) to balancing the budget.

They did this to Clinton, Obama and Biden.

It’s been a perpetual cycle since Reagan introduced supply side / trickle down economics as a political platform. Prior to that billionaires were actually taxed fairly and had to give back to society in order to maintain a positive perception within their community.
