Also, getting rid of property taxes would be effectively a huge gift to the wealthy, who are already getting richer disproportionately fast. I mean we could intentionally go back to the feudal system, but I think most people would riot.

ELI5 why can’t we just do away with the property tax and make all roads toll roads?
We can do that, but if you want commerce to thrive and poor people not to starve in their homes, having public non-toll roads is for the best.
