He’s a very good actor and I have no doubt he can pull it off.
My worry, is that at some point they’ll show us his face. Maybe for even the majority of his screen time. That would be a big mistake. It’s a big source of the problems for Stalone’s Judge Dredd, and a big part of what’s great about Urban’s DREDD.

I don’t doubt his ability, I just worry it’s going to be more of a mirror Tony Stark than Doom. And as you said, I expect they’ll show his face too much, which will be off putting both from him playing Stark and from the standpoint of Doom doesn’t ever show his face.

I agree doom shouldn’t take his mask off. But I have a feeling if they do take it off, it’s because doom in the MCU, is an alternate universe Tony stark. Which is also stupid.

So the “Why does he look like Tony” is the important question I want answered.

I don’t have a problem with Doom removing his mask. I don’t want him to be completely unmasked all of the time, but I don’t want characters to not know who is under the mask.

We, as the audience, 100% know RDJ is playing Doom. That isn’t a secret. Similarly various character should also know, a guy that looks like Tony Stark is going around calling himself Doctor Doom (or maybe that’s only a name other people call him).

Doom revealing his face isn’t a big deal. He shouldn’t do it all the time, Doom doesn’t want to show his face, but it’s not that he doesn’t ever show his face, it’s that he doesn’t want to show his face. Face appearances should be minimal, but not an impossible task.

But I agree that he shouldn’t be a mirror of the Tony Stark we know. Doom needs to be his own character. He’s going to look like Tony Stark. But why is he Victor von Doom? That’s going to be the challenge of the story.

From what we know right now, it doesn’t seem like they are going the Tony Stark route. Which is good but again we don’t know much about the film yet, so I could be wrong.

I’m saying that if he never takes off the mask, the Tony doppelganger issue doesn’t ever need to come up. That will let Doom simply be Doom, without having to complicate things with meta explanations for Doom Tony’s face.

Audiences will know it’s RDJ behind the mask. That’s enough to get butts back in seats, which is the only reason for RDJ to be cast anyway.

According to rumours, in Doomsday, he doesn’t take off his mask at all. Of course, those are rumours, but they are from decently reliable sources, so take it how you want.

In Secret Wars (the movie coming after Doomsday), he most likely will show his face, but at least at that point we have one movie where he doesn’t, and it could create some interesting moments with certain characters.
