Comments which Lemmy thinks are “new” (ones which you haven’t seen before) are highlighted a different color in my web UI. But, it’s not perfect at figuring out when I’ve seen a comment and when I haven’t, so it thinks comments are “new” well past the point when they’re new, so it winds up being somewhat random. Maybe that’s what you’re seeing?
What I like about this is that this used to be a paid feature of reddit or only available in mod subs. Lemmy made it the default.
I think what you’re seeing is just the indicator for “new” comments. I don’t know how lemmy determines if a comment is “new” or not, but if it’s new it will be in the “gold” color.
