I promise, I’m not a spy from Citizen. I’m just a curious guy who is new to the hobby. I often watch YouTube videos about watches and it’s very common to see “10 AFFORDABLE WATCHES YOU MUST BUY!” or a Teddy Bulbasaur video that says “This watch is super affordable & has an entry level price point” then the watch is $595. Hell, right now I’m watching a video about Citizen & the list is saying affordable is under $1000. My limit currently is $250 for a watch. MAYBE, if I save for a bit I’ll raise it to 300. (Disclaimer: I’m in Japan so $250 goes much further. I have a Seiko 5 cement for $120ish.)
I know we all come from different backgrounds and have different financial situations. “Affordable” for you may not be affordable for me. That is perfectly fine. I’m just very curious as when collections are shown in this sub, I like to Google the watch. Often times it’s a multi thousand dollar watch.
Thank you all & I’m looking forward to hearing your stories.
I took a different approach for now with a “one and done” I contemplated having multiple watches but I ended up biting the bullet and selling my tissot prx to get a bronze BB58 which was around $6100cad with tax, at the same time I also got my dad a full sized red BB for around $5500cad for his retirement, I also picked up a beige Casio F91W (believe the beige was EU only) for a work watch which was $65cad. For people not into watches it maybe is a dumb idea to spend 6K on a watch however I plan on wearing this watch for life. One day i would maybe like to add 2 more nice watches to have 3 total but I am very content with having one nice watch and one beater. I don’t get “bored” with this bb58 by having lots of bands and straps to mess around with.
Cost divided by time is an excellent equation to use when buying quality goods. A watch worn every day v. one that lives in a box for “special occasions”. Very much respect to the one-watch folks rocking a nice piece.
Same. It seems like the “collecting” trend has really taken over a lot of hobbies/passions over the past decade, and watches are absolutely not immune. I believe it has to do with conspicuous consumption for social media clout.
