The debates in Oklahoma City over the wisdom of coughing over arena money while other pressing issues exist is painfully familiar to longtime Seattle residents.
How fun would it be to have a city owned team? Residents get to vote on a team owner and GM? All profits from the team get sent back to the city? All the players and team staff are technically city employees.
It’s not owned by the city per se, but the Green Bay Packers are like this. I’m a shareholder and we vote on the board who appoints the president who then acts as our owner in meetings and stuff. They can never move and if they’re disbanded all assets go to charity.
This form of ownership was banned by the NFL, but the Packers are grandfathered in.

Not at all? Players don’t own the NCAA or individual schools.

There’s a couple membership-owned teams. In North America the biggest one is Green Bay Packers, in Europe Barcelona and Madrid are both members-owned.
