I have a milestone birthday coming up and have just begun the recon mission on finding a piece that will complement, but not directly compete with anything I currently have. Not into overly dressy or rectangular watches. 39-43mm range under $10k. No Rolex, I’ve had a few and I didn’t like the attention they got. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Would you mind expounding on that? I’m currently in the market for a sub but have been contemplating when/where I’d wear it based on me preferring people not notice it/call it out and get some weird image/perception so I’m interested in hearing your experience with it.
The only people that have noticed my Sub in public are also watch lovers and it led to a nice conversation. It’s only happened a few times. You should buy what you like and not worry about public perception.
If you want to stay away from Rolex regardless, I think a Grand Seiko or maybe Tag’s new Skipper would be nice adds. Bring in some more color. I’m not big on Tag Heuer, but that Skipper is nice!
I had a sub and an OP, I never felt like they suited me. I think the hype and stigma associated with them made me feel uncomfortable wearing them. I’m the case of the Sub 114060 I had, I felt it stopped me from wearing my speedy. I’m the end, I left the 2264 to fill the Sub void and traded the Sub for the 300 and cash
I don’t own one but I’ve heard your friends with less wealth will give you shit for it and your friends with more wealth will say oh you got that reference? Why didn’t you get _____, it’s way more classy.
Kind of a lose lose. Whether that’s true or not I don’t know. Personally I want an old vintage oyster as they are only around $2k but it’s what’s held me back…
lol if you have normal friends they will never even look at your watch. this is low-end behavior in both examples.
Sounds like a lot of insecurity to me. Loads of friends in my circle wear watches from Rolex to Orient or Moonswatch. People may comment or casually ask questions/ask to try on but there’s no real judgement.
Work is a different story though, mostly it’s fine but when meeting clients probably a good idea to keep the Rolex at home
I suppose this is very much a case of your mileage may vary, but I have a Datejust 36 with a smooth bezel and have never received any type of comments one way or the other. Most people don’t even notice it.
I personally don’t give a shit what other people think about my watch. I didn’t buy it to impress anyone.
Buy what you want. Who cares what other people think or say? Screw em.
