Che Flores spent years becoming one of basketball's rising-star referees. Now, they say, "I feel like I have a responsibility to be who exactly I am without hiding anything."
I think (some/many) people mean well when they say they don’t care, but I think that’s a disappointing response. Saying you don’t care when a marginalized group finally gets representation within an industry means you didn’t care that they were not previously welcome in that industry. “Firsts” matter because they are the end of “nevers.”
There was no formal ban or anything on trans referees and the first female ref was in 1997. I dont think there was anything stopping trans individuals from becoming referees. There is no gender limit or anything.
This just seems like a needless celebration of identity politics. I dont care what the gender of my ref is. Or the race. Or the religions. Just that they get the calls right.

Love this comment man
Same people who say “I don’t see color” then viciously deny that America suffers from systemic racism
