[Question] / recommendation request.

I want to buy my man and you watch for his birthday. I’m usually really good at picking out nice watches for him but he really wants a gold tone watch with a red face/dial. I can’t seem to find a nice one!. My budget is $400-$500 NZD ($230-$300 USD)

Any recommendations?

Ooh… I’m not generally a fan of gold watches, but that is NICE. Citizen are absolutely knocking it out the park at the moment.

Absolutely, it’s one of the very gold-bracelet watches I really like as well. The gold and red are beautiful together. It’s just citizens release philosophy that I find really annoying.

Most of their high end watches are only released in Japan. I’d love to own one of their cal. 0100 models but importing from japan without ever seeing the watch in person is just way to risky for me at that price range. GS is extremely popular, so their is clearly a market for high end HAQ watches. Same thing for the tsuyosa. It was only released in the US this year, even though it has been available here in europe for a while and evene longer. And it became an dimmediate hit at release, which really wasn’t surprising. It will probably take a while until the newer tsuyosa models, like this one, are available everywhere as well.

I’m sure there’s a strategy behind it but so many people think of citizen as just a mall brand. Because they’re never able to see some of their amazing watches.

Totally agree. I think maybe the high-end, HAQ watches are where Grand Seiko were a decade or so ago… not really appreciated by the average watch fan, outside of Japan. The brand perception of Citizen in Japan is much higher. There is also a relatively recent obsession (illogical to my mind) with automatic movements – with even the cheapest, mass-produced mechanical movement being seen as “better” than an exquisitely engineered and finished quartz movement by many. Not anti automatic in any way, and I think these Tsuyosas look great – but I wouldn’t be adverse to a quartz version.
