I have a somewhat beginner camera canon EOS rebel T7 and will be traveling to NYC this weekend. What are some tips for safely photographing? I’m of course a little worried about getting my camera stolen or damaged and wasn’t sure if there are some recommendations on what to do and not to do. We will be in the Manhattan area and one night in Brooklyn (Williamsburg area)
Everyone there is used to cameras. That said, I use a Peak Design wrist strap, mostly for comfort as it allows me to handhold my camera but not feel like I have to grip it tight. The additional benefit is security – it tightens as it pulls away so that thing ain’t coming off, period.
Have fun! I recommend using a low-profile prime (I used a 40mm) and keep it in aperture mode w/ a maximum ISO set; eliminates the need for most futzing w/ settings as your light situation is constantly changing with each step. If you have an intro Canon it probably came w/ a kit lens (18-55 mm?) and that will be perfect as well.
I always wear one of these on trips…makes me feel better in crowds and its less conspicuous than around your neck Amazon.com: AQAREA Camera Wrist Strap for DSLR Mirrorless Camera, Quick Release Camera Hand Strap with Safer Connector(Black) : Clothing, Shoes & Jewelry
As long as you keep your camera on your person, theft will not be a concern. This is one of the safest big cities in America and one of the biggest tourist destinations in the world. You’ll be surrounded by thousands of other people with all kinds of cameras, especially in Manhattan.
The real safety concern (that visitors sometimes overlook) is moving vehicles and people. Please try to be aware of pedestrians in a rush, bikes, delivery e-bikes, and cars whenever you’re shooting. It’s easy to step off the curb with your eye up to the viewfinder not realizing you’re stepping in front of a bike lane, for example.
But have a blast! Shooting in New York is absolute best.
Thank you!! I’ve been there a ton and have walked it late at night without being too scared so I like to think I have a little street sense but have never shot it. Thank you for the advice
I’m a street photographer based in NYC. As long as you’re not an idiot asking for stuff to be stolen you’ll be fine.
My camera body is red so it stands out. I was in Brooklyn/Manhattan last weekend, walked the streets took the subway, and was perfectly fine. Keep your wits about you and you and your camera will be ok. Especially in Manhattan and Williamsburg. If you want to be extra careful wrap your strap around your wrist.
Renters insurance is pretty cheap monthly and it will cover stolen/broken camera and lenses even if it happens outside of your apartment. With Lemonade I can pay a dollar and change more a month for “extra coverage” so I don’t have to pay the deductible.
Ooo thank you I forgot to look into that for cameras. Obviously I have other renters insurance but honestly forgot about it, thanks!
