I really like the writing experience with the Remarkable but it has what are (for me) some fatal flaws:
- the handwriting to text feature is really impressive but having to do it manually every time is painful and even worse is that it does not respect any formatting, just mashing all my text together into one block
- the search is unusable - why can’t I search for tags or text within a notebook?! I have notebooks tagged to a client name and I also take notes from a sales call which talks about all the clients - I can’t search for “Client X” and find all mentions of them
- handwriting looks great on the tablet but from my PC at default resolution it looks dreadful - hard to read even
It’s unfortunately - the hardware is fantastic but the implementation seems subpar to me :-(
Get Note Air 2 Plus, instead!
Seconded. Writing feel is close to rM2 and the note-taking capabilities are incredible.
Imagine the Boox (or even the Supernote, with star-marks and table of contents) note-taking on the rM2…drool
Have they drastically improved their ui? Last time I tried I was impressed by the tech but the ux was very painful.
- You go to the page overview, and over there you can sort by tags. also, you can search text in the notebook, just use the last option on the toolbar to find it
- you can zoom into the page on the PC app to have an Anti Aliased version
You can only search for converted text (and see issue #1 for why that doesn’t work well)
And the zoom is not stored so you have to zoom every single time - strange UX decision…
I’m thinking I am going to return mine as well. I wish so much I could personalize the toolbar and add some icons to switch back to other pages/notebooks quickly. Between the lag and the unfriendly system it’s been more time consuming.
The device seems underpowered to do any form of fast switching and extensive search. Not being able to switch between current and the last notebook is sort of annoying, but not being able to adjust the toolbar and adding new shortcut gestures takes the cake. I don’t know if tagging was included during launch but they have had a few years to improve that function, but instead they add straight line shaping, lol, what a joke. I can navigate an actual paper notebook with sticky tabs faster than I can use this hot garbage.
You can pull up recently opened documents by a dual figure swipe down and also create favorite docs. This can help improve the speed of accessing files, but won’t address all of your concerns.

This is the reason I sold mine. If this functionality ever gets introduced, I’ll sell my Boox and come running back.
Yep, I used livescribe before to digitise everything as I wrote it. And the search on handwriting it had was excellent. I wanted to ditch paper and just use remarkable but the lack of good search is the reason it went back during the trial period
Yeah, the lack of good search is why I sent mine back during the trial period and got a Supernote.
Agreed. Hardware is incredible, but software is lacking. Returned mine for the same reason.
I am probably late to the conversation, but anyway…
The write to text is not by reMarkable. It is powered by a 3rd party app and there is only so much about it they can do. However yes, while it can decipher a lot, the lack of respect for formatting is rendering it more or less useless for anything but a basic notes.
I dont agree with you on the handwriting on PC. I am sometimes using my RM notes during a Zoom presentations instead of making a powerpoint. So far no-one had a complaint.
The overall lack of software features is the main thing dragging this tablet down. I know they are marketing it as minimalistic, but holy hell they refuse to implement even the most basic quality of life improvements for some strange reason. What’s making it even worse is that the company is not in touch with the community. There are some great ideas floating in this very sub, but the developers are not here to read them or communicate at all.
