    Whatever catches your eye man…

The weird reality is, for non watch nerds (which is 99% of people), the only brand they probably recognize as expensive is Rolex. So if care about what other people think, it really only comes down to Rolex or nothing.

I mean maybe I’m missing something. I really don’t get why a Rolex is all that. I mean it’s ok, but why is it worth so much? Like, I’ve bought cars for less than what they want for a watch. Its is just name brand? I mean, for 5-700 bucks you can get a damn nice piece. Why is a Rolex worth so dang much?

The price of a Rolex is too dang high!

99% of people simply don’t care for watches, so they only know 1 premium brand.

It’s like going up to a bunch of people who don’t build PCs, asking them “name me all you motherboard brands you know” and they’ll sheepishly say “uhh, Intel?” Or people who don’t fish and ask “name me all the fishing rod brands you know” and get back a sheepish “uhh, shimano?”

If you ask people “name me all the luxury watch brands you know” you’ll get Rolex, and mayyyybbee Omega. The average person doesn’t know more than 3 luxury watch brands haha

Non watch people might recognize omega. I knew it from James bond and history books before I got into watches

Yeah, some will. I was wearing my old Geneve Dynamic, and a young guy at the drive-thru recognized that it was an Omega. He said those and Tag Heuer were good. I figure that might put him a bit above-average among non-watch people.

So if care about what other people think, it really only comes down to Rolex or nothing.

The key mistake that these people make is that trying to show off and impress everyone is a mark of lacking class. The true elites only care about impressing the other elites.

This is also what people miss about the business card scene in American Psycho. People think it’s silly how these men get hung up on superficial details, but the whole point is that these things matter to the only people they consider to matter.

This is absolutely true. I would much rather another watch nerd give me the knowing nod of recognition than some Joe Schmo off the street saying ooh is that a Rolex

Got a Seiko alpinist spb121j recently and had a client at work notice it and say “nice watch I love the alpinist” Sparked a conversation about watch collecting and how its not always about the most expensive watch or brand but what you love.
