Just came out of a discussion when someone was arguing that “if everyone here would pay $10-20 per year, the whole platform would be completely different”, but that seemed quite unrealistic to me.
What do you think?
I frequently criticize their attitudes yet at the same time I also appreciate so much that they have released the Lemmy sourcecode as FOSS. I highly respect that decision - so much so that I tend to think of them as (extremely) difficult friends/allies rather than some kind of opposition
They both simultaneously hold back the wider adoption of the Threadiverse among a more mainstream audience (who enjoys being explicitly made fun of? yet Lemmy.ml makes fun of Western culture all the time, on top of / in addition to their disdain for capitalism), even while having helped the portion of our shared cause SO MUCH by having created a truly viable Reddit alternative. It isn’t perfect, but it’s damn fine and I enjoy it, and therefore props to them. Legit I wish I could say that more often too, without doing so bringing out all the trolls.
Bc fuck spez, that’s why!:-P
