Do you consider the Speedmaster 3211.31 a homage to the Rolex Daytona Exotic dial ‘Newman’ variant?
Some arguments: The panda dial, steel bezel, red accents (though darker red on some variants of the exotic) recall the Rolex. Also, during this era, Omega produced some far more conspiuous homages to the exotic dial Rolex, such as the Schumacher Legend series, which indicate that Omega was given to doing Rolex homages and, therefore, that this watch was also configured to recall the Rolex. On the other hand, the dial is actually silver, not white, though it looks white compared to the steel when in the light. Beyond the colors, the design language is very Omega. Compare this reference to the many Speedmaster dates of the era such as all the 3210 variants… the basic watch itself is not Rolex at all. Given the register layout, the date function, the case and bracelet styling, no one would mistake the Omega for the Rolex, even at a distance.
Just to preclude something, this discussion is not about whether homages are valid or worthy of the brands or lines involved. Rather, it’s about whether or not you consider this specific Omega is an homage.
So many of the big brands share overlapping features and interests. It’s almost incestuous, to put it mildly! So technically they all seem to be homages of each other! Little differences here and there in quality and/or materials, but many times, have strong resemblances.
But I would never ever categorize a Speedy as an homage of a Rolex. A Rolex has never been to the moon.
