Stop reality checking us! I already paid for a FW16 waiting on Batch 5. I don’t want to read this! Make him stahhp!
The cool thing about this is you don’t have to buy it if you think it’s too much!
Yep, I do this.
However I wish the best for the modularity of framework and I hope as time pass the price can also be better. When it became available in Taiwan I instantly checked how much it would cost. Almost 60k 🫠 for the Ryzen build my poor memory telling me 57-58 range not sure if there was dedicated GPU card or just the integrated one. Similar ryzen build from Lenovo is about 25k TWD with no dedicated GPU in it. I didn’t check more about the very details because I think I set up the order properly for the first time and the price was so insane for my budget I instantly got discouraged.
No framework for Peter for now. Thank you for all of you supporting framework with your purchases. It should help people like me.
And even better, they don’t need to post!
Honestly - yes, that’s the price. If you want something comparable go check out lenovo.com and find a coupon code.
A framework laptop isn’t cheap but the reasons are obvious? Let’s go with one of the main reasons - economy of scale. It’s cheaper to make lots of something vs a small amount of the same thing. Framework’s been around for what 3 or so years? Let’s pick Lenovo - been around for decades. Has a vast product catalogue. Sells? Hundreds of thousands of computers a year. If Framework had the same volume you would be paying Lenovo prices. I’m sure you get that though right OP?
Looks like a pretty decent deal to, over here alternatives start at 1.6k on their base models with discounts applied.🤔
I’ll have you try another experiment. Add 64gb of ram and a 4tb HDD. Then compare it with Apple or Lenovo or Sony with that storage, a similar processor, the same screen size, and a metal chassis.
Everyone else will charge you huge markups in the SSD and RAM. The markup from framework isn’t nearly as large, and you can it to buy on your own (with no markup).
The base config is the worse case scenario.
And again, it’s not about the money anyway. If apple sold a $700 m2 MacBook pro and I would pay them the extra $500 to make it repairable and upgradable, I would - but I can’t.
Dave with the thinner Lenovo’s, etc.
Honestly I am left questioning only because I could spend $1100 and get a Lenovo with maxed out (for my purposes) specs right now given BF coupon codes.
I am left questioning the Lenovo because I don’t get the same level of build quality expected as I do with the Framework.
I’m going with the Framework at the same $1100 price.point. I am only providing an NVME SSD.
It’s cool that you’re excited about the concept, and maybe in a year or two it’ll come down to a price that works better for you.
Most of us know what we’re getting and we’re happy about it. In this case, it’s not a fit for you, and that’s ok; if you later decide that you want the additional modularity in your life, you still have the option to buy a Framework. I consider that part of the modularity :)
the price is what it is. and yeah it might be a bit on the higher side, i agree. but i’m hopeful that in the future they will be able to lower them a little bit :)
well, if you go with the 7640u, you will save ~400$
Sounds like Framework isn’t the right choice for you. I’d recommend you go buy the $700 option… Save the $500 difference so you’ve got money in the bank to buy its replacement when parts that should be repairable/replaceable - Aren’t.
If you’re able to find anything similar to Framework for $700, good build quality - Do let us know what that is… I’m sure everyone here would be happy to save some money.
so as long as I can’t find any, frameworks are justified for that price? neat
If you can’t find the $700 quality laptop already on the market that you want… Maybe you should start a company to offer it? See how profitable the business is (or realistically, isn’t).
There’s very good reasons $700 laptops are mostly e-waste straight off the assembly line, old models, etc. There’s no profit to be made offering current generation mid-range/higher quality laptops for $700 without doing serious corner cutting at every opportunity.
Its called competition. Supply and demand. As son as there’s another Framework-like company or two, the companies will need to find new ways to differentiate themselves - One possibility would be on pricing.
Supply and demand. And im sure they wish they could offer lower prices for more sales.
Framework isn’t the cheapest laptop - upfront.
Framework is the cheapest laptop over time, as you upgrade though.
They also need to make money to pay their staff to make things. Unless you have the skills and time to fit intel/amds next gen chips on the existing mobo frame - for free?
If you’re that concerned about price, stick to discounted Walmart or Target laptops.
Framework is an awesome company that makes awesome products.
Honestly the Framework isn’t going to be the cheapest laptop if you plan to do a lot of upgrades. If you are upgrading from the 11th gen Intel Framework to the current AMD motherboard, you are going to shell out nearly as much as you would for a new laptop when you factor in the motherboard, RAM, wifi adapter, and possibly new battery.
The ability to be able to replace individual components is incredible and should not be understated. Repair costs are where the Framework excels. It is much easier and cheaper to replace a broken display on the framework than it is a Dell XPS 13. Assuming the motherboard lasts, you can theoretically keep a Framework going for 10 years with minimal costs.
You need to replace the wifi again? Isnt that the same pinout?
