Revolt is pretty good! Most of the features you want from discord are already there. It’s FOSS and servers can be self-hosted.

Revolt has been super dead every time I use it. I can’t get a feel for it because any communities I find with any chatter usually go silent within a month

element isn’t bad tbh. I’ve been using it lately, and it’s actually caught up a lot.

It’s also federated, so anyone can run a server and any of your users can join any other servers. I’ve been slowly migrating my discord server over to it

So it’s instance driven as well then. I’m not quite techie Enough to run my own instance but hopefully I can find a good one for us to jump on. Thanks for the tip. I tried revolt but it just wasn’t quite it and every server I’ve gone to has been a graveyard.

The problem with revolt is that they didn’t do federation, so every server is going to be limited to people who want accounts on that one, and discord has shown us that people want one interface to see all of their servers. So I’m not surprised. I like their UI, but they need to federate with other servers.

As for hosting I understand what you’re saying. There’s a few options to host your own with a couple of clicks online, but paid of course. To test it out I’d say set up on a smaller instance and see how you like it. It’s rougher than discord for sure, but I’ve tried all of the others and it’s where I’m landing.
