I’m an intermediate photographer who just started getting into sports photography. My 70-200 f2.8 takes fantastic shots, but I’m running into a problem where my DOF is too small, and the subjects are often slightly outside the optimal focal range. I’d like a solution to calculate the focal range beforehand so I don’t have to guess the best aperture. Keeping the aperture open is preferred because of the less-than-perfect lighting, but obviously not at the cost of sharpness. Anyone have any tricks or solutions for this?

If your camera supports it, use edge focusing rather than calculating distance.
