Working on an app, still in the build and validate phase.

Everywhere online I keep seeing posts about how little apps make and how impossible it is - I’m rethinking putting all this time into this.

Can you make money with an app nowadays?? I was thinking I’d hopefully carve myself out a solid income, ideally 5-10k if I do it right, but now I’m thinking I’ll be lucky to get $500/mo

It really depends. A lot of people make apps for like the sake of making an app. The real question is does it offer a benefit over a mobile website?

If no, don’t bother. You’re just decreasing user adoption.

YMMV for building an app but if you can build a killer app it’s usually worth it.

    Yes, looks saturated these days.

I was thinking, even if you don’t have a SaaS kind of idea, but something more suitable for mobile app, possible approach could be :
    - Build a responsive web app, robust backend, intuitive frontend

    - catchy, short url

    - Put efforts into marketing this, getting users, probably making accounts, visiting/using regularly. Engage in mailing lists to keep them up to date with features etc.

    - To the point that you get requests for mobile app! Even a small page on website saying Mobile App Coming Soon (or on request)

    How does that sound?

Possible because I’m doing it. The folk who say you can’t do it are all here, the others are living the good life and have no time to be here. Look at the charts on the App Store. Look at the revenue estimates on websites. There are plenty doing it.

It’s all about finding your niche. I built an Orchidometer app for iPhone and it provides me with a decent income while helping men around the world. The most important thing is to release fast and then scale and improve.

My app is not perfect, but it’s still helping people. Now that I’ve released it, I can use my code to develop similar apps. So some tips for you:

    1. Beware of feature creep. Release it as fast as you can. Keep improving along the way.

    2. Keep monetization in mind. How are you going to generate revenue?

    3. If it doesn’t work, abandon the idea and start over with something new.

    4. If you fail, do it hard and fast. Then start over again.
