In fact, there are only 12 US states that have a bigger population than NYC alone, and one of those is New York state. From a population perspective, the mayor of NYC is equivalent to the governor of Virginia. That’s why everyone is freaking out about this so much. Plus he’s young and very handily beat the candidate backed by the DNC establishment, showing cracks in what they assumed was a solid neoliberal core.
