I am a digital nomad based in Germany. I know that destinations in europe like south italy (i.e. Puglia) or Sicilia are more expensive and very crouded during the big summer holidays (July-end of august).

I have to be around europe in june/july and I am searching for a good and affordable place to live during that time, preferably areas in Italy/Spain or Hungary/Croatia/Greece or anywhere else really.

I’m looking forward to your recommendations!

Bansko in Bulgaria is a very affordable option with a vibrant local community. Great hiking and nature.

North of Spain (near Bilbao) is interesting. But with current temperatures, I’d personally consider staying more north during the peak summer months. It can be very uncomfortable in July/August in the south of Europe (very, very warm). Spring and autumn are imo the best seasons to reside in southern europe.

I never voluntarily choose to go to Europe in August, but I had to be there this August. Ljubljana and Salzburg were both not too crowded. Bled was a bit crowded but it wasn’t nut to butt like a lot of touristy places in Europe are at that time (such as Lisbon). For Austria I imagine places like Graz would be even less crowded. Budapest is also ok in summer if you do not stay around fisherman’s bastion in Buda or the basilica in Pest… somewhere around Oktogon or Corvin negyed would be better
