According to old Heads, East was significantly superior than the West. So they argue Bird Celtics have a tough road in the conference. And even if they manage to win, the reward is playing against Showtime Lakers most of the time. (They were heavily favored against Rockets in 1981 and 1986 though)

Can someone tell me how Cedric Maxwell won the FMVP over Bird that series? Maxwell just barely edges Bird in PPG (17.7 vs 15.3) but Bird’s rebounding was insane. He nearly matched Moses Malone of all people (15.3 to 15.7), not to mention leading both teams with 7 assists and 2.3 steals per game. Bird had a team-high 27 points in the clinching game 6.
All I have to go off of are box scores, so was there an eye test thing I’m missing? Was this, in any way, comparable to Iggy’s FMVP in 2015?
