Hi all! I am a fresh NBA addicted and, surprisingly, I understand that the vast majority of fans laugh at Knicks.

Again, as a newbie into the NBA, I was assuming that a team based in NY, with a rich owner and lacking a NBA trophy since years would have been an immediate choice as a team to support.

Could someone explain me why? I imagine that bad management will be the main cause, but I am curious to understand more.

Please give me a reason to support and a reason no to support them.

I really hope you convince me to go for them 😃

Massive team in a massive city, massive fanbase, but some of the least frequent success of any team in the NBA over the past few decades.

Usually big-market teams have an immensely easy time building talented squads, but they’ve somehow managed to be a non-factor in the league

Their fanbase as a whole doesn’t expect shit. There’s always a few morons in a group that size.

Because you have had 0% chance to win a championship since the 1900s

On top of it you look stupid while being bad too. Is what it is

The owner is a big part of it, he’s widely regarded as one of the worst in the league if not the worst. they are also hugely popular and their logo is all over NYC as a fashion statement. It’s sort of the equivalent of if the Yankees had not won since the 70s. If everyone in a city is a fan of a team that never wins anything despite having tons of money and one of the best venues in sports in MSG, it invites a lot of jokes at their expense.

Another part of it is that the team is worth second most of any NBA team at 6.6 billion. To have such a mediocre resume for 50+ years for a team like that is definitely inviting ridicule, even from their own fans.

James Dolan makes it easy to hate anything he’s a part of really, but otherwise the Knicks are one of the largest markets in the league, with only LA to really compare. That territory comes with the natural ribbing you’re going to get if you’re not successful for a very long time. Having all the market advantages yet still doing poorly (relatively speaking) = you’re ass gonna be made fun of.

Now is a decent time to support the Knicks, they have the best team they’ve had in over 20-25 years, competent management, a good coach, and a bunch of young players that are fun to watch. The owner used to meddle in the team alot and cause problems, but he has largely stopped doing this now.

The team is made fun of alot because they have a history of singing terrible players to expensive contracts, drafting badly, missing the playoffs or being elimnated quickly, and in general just completely messing up their potential despite their huge market and NBA players wanting to play there. They probably have the biggest disparity of market/power to team success in all of professional sports.
