how much do you pay for second shooters / how much are you paid as a second shooter?

i’m a beginner horse show photographer, and have been in contact with a photographer who’s interested in bringing me on as a second shooter. i’m honestly just happy to get the experience, but she mentioned discussing pay. i’m interested to see what that typically looks like before i talk to her.

    I pay my second shooters $500 a day to shoot with my equipment and hand over their memory cards. When I’ve second shot for people in the past, it has either been at a similar day rate or $75/hr.

        Uncoincidentally, I have no shortage of skilled people willing to shoot exactly how I want and keep up the certifications I need from them to access the events we cover 😀

          I see certs brought up occasionally, I shoot some NCAA & USA Track & Field National Championships and have never had a cert or been asked for any. Can you elaborate? If you can’t say then that’s ok. Thanks.

            Sure! Anyone photographer who accesses the playing area of the sports I cover is required to be background checked every two years a have current Safe Sport training and Photographer membership. The ID has a QR code event directors scan, and you need to sign your name and member number to the sanction sheet.

    It depends on how much the photographer is charging, not to mention country/area/niche etc. Of course you can’t ask that question to the photographer. Plus are you using his/her equipment or yours? Meals included? how many hours?

    They will probably offer you a flat rate for the whole day (whatever that is, it could be from 6 to 12 hours, sometimes even more) If you are just beginning, looking to learn, charge something decent, just remember you are not an experienced 2nd shooter, be clear about what they expect from you and don’t do it for free, a lot of photographers abuse that position of saying “be grateful for the learning experience” fuck that.
