I found a thread on twitter and the guy breaks down Luka’s impact with supporting data. Is Luka a generational talent or an overrated player? Everyone seems to think he’s a winning player but the stats say otherwise.

Some stats below:

Kyrie with Luka together: +/- +2.95 (286 mins)

Luka (Kyrie on bench): +/- -3.5 (275 mins)

Kyrie (Luka on bench): +/- +5.6 (142 mins)

I think they made that post after the one I made, but there was actually some good insight from it.

Luka is elite but he doesn’t fit the current team that well/ the team doesn’t fit his needs that well, doesn’t mean he isn’t a top 5/10 player, just means he needs specific pieces around him, like with Harden.

I think he might be tbh. Dudes incredibly skilled and talented, and one of the best one-on-one players I’ve ever seen. But he doesn’t really do any of the little things and never runs back on defense. The Mavs being better with him off the court basically every year seems to be a bad sign for me

Both Harden (in his prime) and Luka are winning players. Don’t use plus/minus, it’s a shit stat that doesn’t have enough context to be the sole indicator.

Harden in his prime had great impact though. Even prime Russ did.

Not big into advanced stats but I’ve always been confused why they don’t like Luka. Does anybody have an explanation?

Very few people that follow the NBA actually watch full games.

For most fans it’s highlights on YouTube, X, or tiktok.

Luka makes amazing highlights, so for the casual fan he is a moving bucket.

The stat obsessed crowd and the fantasy league experts might disagree, but highlights plus the eyeball test = he is amazing for 90% of the fans.

Imagine for 1 season if every dominant iso star only played garbagetime and against benchplayers.

To make a legitimate argument like this people usually wait for at least a 1000 minute sample size in a season
