long story short…
- hosted 2x2TB Crucial MX500 SSD in RAID1 in DNS-320L (Dlink)
- both metadata and superblock corrupted, unable to boot.
- spent $1.5k for data recovery and sent 1 of the SSD for RMA (bad sectors)
- bought new NAS 223j and 1x WD Red Plus 2TB
- insert WD Red+ and MX500 SSD cannot create SHR storage pool (because HDD and SSD cannot mix)
my solutions (3-2-1 backup strategy)…
- wait for RMA SSD to come back and insert 2xSSD (WD Red+ keep aside or try to sell off) + iDrive e2 as remote backup
- buy 1 more WD Red+ and insert 2xHDD (2xSSD keep aside or try to sell off) + iDrive e2 as remote backup
- ignore the 3-2-1 remote backup strategy: buy 1 more WD Red+ and insert 2xHDD to start using NAS + buy SSD enclosure to use 1 of the 2 SSD as 2nd backup (via NAS USB port) … NOT paying for iDrive e2 subscription.
What will you do in my case?
i went ahead and setup 2x2tb wd red+ as raid1 in shr1 in synology 2bay 223j,but i still have commenters said i should deploy 2x SSD instead, for cache and indexing, i dont quite undetstand what benefits i can get from using SSD vs HDD.
just offload photos from mobile storage to nas every 3 weeks, plus occasionally steam drama series from nas via dlna or plex.
As long you don’t have SHR disks, 2TB HDD should be find. These days 2TB SSDs are about the same price as a 2TB HDD or at least much more affordable, a lot faster, quieter, and use less power.
