Here are a few ideas to spice it up:
-
8 games instead of 4 spread across Nov - December, home and home each team
-
Tournament starts before new year, finals in the first week of January
-
Finals held at home of the team with the better record or +/-
-
Final 4 teams, guarantee entry into play-in/playoffs
This will create added excitement and will keep it lasting into the new year!
Than from this, we have a month to look forward to All Star weekend. Than after that, the NBA Playoffs.
What do yall think?
Winner gets a pick between rounds 1 and 2
head 2 head should not be the primary tiebreaker. No round robin system uses this. No one game in group play should mean more than any other.
I do wonder what they’re gonna do when the league expands to 32 teams. 8 groups of 4 and eliminating the wildcard would make sense. But then that means there’s only 3 games played for each team. Might make sense to expand it to play 6 games at that point, especially if the tournament ends up being successful over the next few years.
Two wild cards from Each Conference advance, and you play a second 4-game-round of group play.
Top two teams of each conference second round advance to knock out round.
Semifinal: 2nd in East plays 1st in West, and 1st in East plays 2nd in West.
The tournament has done a pretty good job of making the NBA more like a European Soccer league season with random overlapping tournaments that make things confusing but fun, but they can go farther with it with these additions:
Include random non NBA teams like Duke, the best G League team, or Barcelona’s basketball team.
Groupings determined by a celebrity fishing out ping pong balls from a bowl on TV.
Declare one game a year the “Community Shield”. I’ve never learned what the Community Shield game is about, and I don’t care to, but I know it’s a thing they kind of care about but not that much.
Create a second in season tournament but only invite the good teams. Create a third in season tournament and invite the next best teams. The teams not good enough for either get to chill.
Start calling it a “treble” if you win three tournaments in the same year.
Tie games in the knockout rounds determined by five players per team shooting one free throw each.
When we get to the point when a team realizes that it’d be better to lose a certain game than try to win, we know we’ll have succeeded.
If a game finishes tied, there is no overtime. Instead the game goes to a 3 point shootout.
5 open shots from the top of the arc for each team. Tell me you wouldn’t watch that.
winner gets 5% lottery odds.
the tournament is fun for now but I still think there should be a real prize like in European soccer where cup winners qualify for European competition the next season
