Since the high speed dream is “too costly” and “too bold” to realize, Via and Yves’ plan is to propose the dumbest idea ever, with a politically palatable amount of cost. When the consortiums all come back and say “HFR is dumb, here’s the costed plan for HSR”, then we end up getting it done, and as a rule it must be overbudget and behind schedule otherwise it wouldn’t be a true Canadian project.
The Ottawa Montreal project is a fine idea but it should be run by a government-owned subsidiary. There’s no way Via Rail is going to adapt new technology just for one route and the comparisons between the national and regional operators is a bit of apples to oranges.
