All the commercialized platforms are going to continue enshittifying, anyone capable of independent thought is going to abandon ship, the fediverse is going to grow, and there will be two vastly different internets: the mainstream, corporate, algorithmically-curated, profit-driven toxic slopfests; and the decentralized, independent platforms that aren’t motivated by profit where everyone sane goes instead.
To the people trapped in the former, it’ll be all they know and they’ll think it’s representative of the world and the web. It’ll be like the matrix. And it’ll be hostile to anyone who leaves the matrix, especially when they go back over bringing a lifeline to anyone willing to abandon those platforms.
This is I think what a lot of people aren’t realizing. Discord was being used for a lot of stuff that really should have been handled differently.
The only reason it was picked was because Discord was free, easy to setup, and everyone used it.
