What could’ve been
Since the last article posted about Obsidian talking about a new New Vegas (and how it probably will never be), I have been wondering why they didn’t simply make The Outer Worlds basically their own version of a New Vegas sequel. It would have been fucking great for a couple reasons:
-
Obviously having a new game like New Vegas would be nice.
-
But it also would fit with tradition of making something, it being successful, not having rights to the name for a sequel, and just making up a new IP for the sequel that isn’t using the same name. Like how Fallout came to exist in the first place when they wanted to make a sequel to the original Wasteland.
I feel like they did try to do that with Outer Worlds. But it was too shallow. The writing too bland and too on the nose. What made New Vegas great was the feeling of being in and exploring a wasteland and having your expectations subverted in hilarious encounters. The factions had meaningful identities and interactions. The world felt large. The DLCs made it feel even bigger. The Outer Worlds was just so disappointing in comparison. It ended up being yet-another-dystopian-sci-fi romp.
I feel like TOW2 is doing more than the first one did. Totally agree that TOW1 was a bit bland and also didn’t really do much more than FO4, dialogue wise. The second game, so far, has been better in the RPG part. Much more options, funnier jokes, build actually matters more, etc. Right off the bat the first major, world affecting decision you make has 4 options instead of just 2, and you need to go out of your way finding optional stuff to even have more than just 2 options available when making the choice.
I find it crazy that TOW2 is reviewing more mixed than the first one, when it has thus far been a much better game in every way.
I found TOW1 tedious. Is TOW2 really that much better?
The RPG part is. It’s no BG3 but it has a lot of ways of solving quests and skills matter more. The combat is pretty much the same. The plot is also intriguing and not just a string of bad jokes.
I am actually kinda thinking of starting over because I made a build that benefits from no companions, but the companions are actually kinda cool now.
