Yeah…I don’t think that Bill Watterson was very happy about the comic towards the end. The strips were more bitter and cynical than funny.
So if OP wants him to come out of retirement, I don’t think he would.
I also think that it would be hard for someone else to capture the comic’s feel.
Also, while this isn’t an absolute dealbreaker, C&H was set in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and while some things are timeless, there’d be some continuity issues. Like, does Calvin suddenly live in a world with smartphones? Is the family car the same? Is there a computer and the Internet? Is the television still as important, given the decline in usage in America since that period? Do we have a Calvin living in a world of about thirty-five years ago, or does he just have the world suddenly change?
Honestly, I’d rather have something inspired by Calvin & Hobbes that picks up some of the neat properties of the comic.

I’m not clear on whether that’s a question, a statement, a request, or something else.
However, some fifteen years ago, I read and liked Frazz. It’s not C&H2.0, but inspires - or at least did for me - a lot of the same feelings.
