As SSD is getting cheaper, I find myself keep thinking that I should buy a bigger one.

But this isn’t really a decision based on actual need - and I can tell my mind is playing tricks to convince me that “you need to get it because what if you want to install a lot of large games”.

I’m thinking may be a reasonable criteria instead is to see my current utilization, and buy one only if the utilization exceeds a percentage - say “>80% disk util=> buy a new one” as a rule?

What is your criteria to get a bigger disk?

I personally have about 7tb of space in my gaming machine but that’s mostly because I used to have terrible internet and have been in the habit of downloading a bunch of stuff and holding since downloaded took too long. My speeds are much better now but I still hoard stuff anyway

i had plenty of physical space in my computer case and didn’t want to spend a huge amount on drives, so i have my OS and some games on a SSD and have added a bunch of old enterprise HDDs (6TB, 3TB, and 2TB) to store media and games on. having only an SSD seems overly expensive if you want to store large amounts

Take this with a grain of salt, cause I did a rig upgrade not too long ago, and was accidentally shipped far more drives than I ordered, so my storage space is silly.

Instead of replacing the drive in your machine, maybe try getting a nas or something. You can store a lot of your files there and keep the drive in your rig for things that need to be fast, like games. Also, I usually base my storage increase purposes based on how much room I need for backups. If there isn’t enough room for me to do a full compressed backup, it’s time to add more. Besides that, I replace the drive with most of the other parts in one large upgrade.

For me, I only have the one NVME slot, so I’m waiting until I can summon the motivation to switch it over and reinstall arch and all the settings the way I like it.

I only have 500GB but with a 2TB external HDD I still have 50% free space

I only have a few games and two 500GB SSDs have been more than enough for me. My first started to fill up with ~60GB left on storage so I grabbed another.

SSDs are pretty cheap now. If you can afford larger ones, I don’t see why you shouldn’t grab one just in case you find yourself with a big library of games in the future.
