Some time ago some fascists took a copy of Mastodon and made Truth Social with it. Arguably the damage caused by Truth Social to the world is greater than the good Mastodon brought to a few of us. This is my greatest fear, for PieFed. I can’t stop fascists from using software I made but […]
This is actually what PieFed.zip does. Hexbear.net for sure and I believe Lemmygrad.ml also are blocked for every new user that signs up, then a message sent to their inbox explaining how to unblock or reblock them at will.
Hexbear can be a toxic shithole, so making federation with it be opt-in for new users while still retaining the ability of existing users to continue to access it offers the best of both worlds?
I’ve been seriously considering adding this to PieFed’s onboarding process. Admins could provide a default block list and people could untick them individually just after registering (or in their settings, any time).
That actually sounds REALLY neat imho - people will endlessly debate whether others should be allowed to block them at all (although… c’mon, they KNOW why it is done!?) - but it being opt-in makes a huge difference.
Not that I would ever want to see hexbear unblocked for myself ofc…🤪. But to each their own.
Perhaps most important is the labeling process, to alert people in the first place that the instance is “highly controversial and aggressive about their extremist views” - a wording that likely they would even agree with themselves (even while simultaneously resenting any label being applied at all). Because people new to the Fediverse simply will not know what is obvious and plain to those of us who have been here for at least a few months already, yet we want newcomers to have a good experience here, not ruined by trolls that their admins refuse to keep in check, thereby forcing us to do the task instead. See Paradox of Intolerance.
