I’ve been using the Microblog feature to crosspost content from some Mastodon instances into one of the threadiverse communities. First off, thank you for working on these features. I’m definitely excited to be able to pull in more content to communities.
There are a few issues that I consistently see:
- Newline issues: While the microblog post itself gets this right, attempting to crosspost it ignores newlines. This frequently mixes up URLs with post content causing invalid links if not caught/corrected manually.
- URL Issues: The url text is displayed while the actual url itself is lost. Again, not an issue with the microblog post, just with cross posting.
- Quoted Text is lost: I know support for this is in the works, I’m just including it to be a bit more thorough. It would be great if cross posting a quoted post was visually/functionally similar to how quoted posts appear on Mastodon.
- Multi-Image Support (only the first image in a post is shown): Same as above, just including it in this list.
- Ability to crosspost any Mastodon post: Same as above. I know it’s already on the list.
Examples of these issues can be seen when attempting to crosspost this post here:

Currently I need to manually update the crosspost to try to preserve what I can from the original as well as include any quoted text.
I’m also trying to remember to @ the OP as well since I don’t think they’re being notified when their content is cross-posted (compared to how they would probably expect to be notified in the case of some other Mastodon user quoting them).
This was my attempt to fix up the crosspost for the the post linked above:

Thanks for experimenting with this.
The Mastodon integration is under active development at the moment - there will be a major release bringing lots of improvements in the next few days. So far there’s nothing new that addresses cross-posting but I’m sure it will need attention soon.
It’s probably going to be a bit janky because Lemmy and PieFed share posts using markdown whereas Mastodon only gives us HTML. So unless I think of something better we’ll be converting their HTML into Markdown, which is going to be very messy.
Some Mastodon Glitch servers create markdown, which is to say, almost no Mastodon servers.
I’m also trying to remember to @ the OP as well since I don’t think they’re being notified when their content is cross-posted
I’m not sure if the following is doable but I feel a cross-post should be a boost.
Or maybe a quote, so it can contain the @ of the community?I feel like boosting would be complicated. If 2 communities boost the same post, how do you know which comment goes where?
Let’s investigate
This post and comment arrived to this instance because here I’m following my Mastodon account with which I boosted your comment
If a toot originates from Mastodon and cross-posts are boosts/quotes, comments become Mastodon threads - every community it got cross-posted to should receive it
or
I guess Mastodon’s quote permissions should dictate if comments under cross-post become a thread under original or a separate entity
Quote test: https://piefed.zip/c/playground@piefed.social/p/1724931/re-social

Could be…
Or, maybe just create a new link post which links to the Mastodon post. Then PieFed will embed the mastodon post in the UI and it’ll be fully functional with all it’s replies, playable video, photo galleries, etc.
Like this: https://piefed.social/c/playground@piefed.social/p/2274257/mastodon-embed-example
cool! but then OP won’t be notified about replies?
I guess not :(
Quote-boost might be the way to go!
crossposting Mastodon posts into communities seems a lot more realistic than expecting Mastodon to improve anything in regards to communities/groups lol
this is an actually feasible way to bring Mastodon and the Threadiverse together
