This is because it’s emulating Reddit, and operates in the same ways, cultures, and countries as Reddit does.

From bad mods and bans, to niche communities, to the brigading and politics. From rating posts, avoiding discussions, and responding with meme floods.

Lemmy will merely reproduce all the negativity, politics, and everything else we hate about Reddit …and it’s already doing so.

[EDIT: As you can see in the comments, full of people agreeing Lemmy will also be toxic in similar ways].

That’s not why. It’s because the userbase is human. Humans are sometimes toxic, no matter the platform they happen to be on.

Well, of course. People are going to be people. It really has little to do with the platform.

Downvoted for not being unpopular at all. Many users here have been (perma)banned from Reddit, so yeah, no surprises.

I’m tempted to pass this one by because it’s so damn self congratulating.

But it isn’t an unpopular opinion, it’s too common for that.

And it’s not really accurate in the way you present it.

It’s a numbers game. If 90% of people are assholes (and that’s a low estimate), then the more people in a given group, the more assholes are present.

But, if the group is started by people that fled to avoid assholes that also weren’t mostly assholes, you get a period of leeway where assholery is very low. That period passed maybe a year and a half ago, +/- six months.

Since then. The numbers have gone up and the game is shifting towards the usual assholery.

They don’t even want people to browse it without logging in any more. I’d cruise by occasionally mainly to remind myself why I left, but I can’t any more, so I don’t even bother doing that. Reddit is dead.

The common denominator is people. Anonymity gives some people the feeling they can say things they would never say face to face, which isn’t all bad, but without filters discussions can be toxic. Been true since the early days, will always be true when there are few consequences for speaking without caring how it comes across.

I’m curious why you see niche communities as a bad thing. They were the shining part of Reddit, and many here complain that because of the decentralization it’s harder to get them to grow. Maybe that’s what you mean, they can’t get big? That’s not really a bad thing, small means more accountability potential.

I think the way to address this is to acknowledge, as a community, that dealing with the behavior of the worst people in the world is an evolving problem that needs to be continually, perpetually addressed if we are to have a sustainable internet community that isn’t awful to engage with. I don’t think it will ever be a truly solved problem, but I think there’s a lot of room for improvement. And it think it’s annoying, tiring, thankless work that’s very worth doing, and worth figuring out how to do well. The better we figure out how to have a nice, global internet community, the better all our lives will be.

I came here to explain this and explain why.

Internet sites will all go the way of reddit because female-coded websites had ended/lost their base. So the wave of blue church nuts have no where else to go so they flood everything with their shitty ideological systems and appeals to authority and authoritarianism.

And they won’t admit that it is their own crap that stinks everything up.

So the Internet has a strong divide between male and female users. In what sites they use and where they aggregate. Women-coded websites like geocities, imgur, and tumblr were some of the first to be acquired to be monetized. Because the Mormon church had shown how effectively women could be leveraged for ad revenue and marketing. When those places became compromised women moved into the male coded places and it changed the demographics. Making those places the next targets for purchase and control.

Also - women coded does not just mean social media. Yes FB, Insta, Tiktok ect are feminine focused but that is for the bulk of the population. Not strong internet users.

There are some female vestiges remaining. But they’re newer and mostly monetized to generating smut.

At which point down the conspiracy rabbit hole is it that sentences become equal parts disturbing, nonsensical and offensive?

Rabbit holes are wild and the twists and turns are never expected.

No intent to offend, simply reporting how others look to manipulate online communities for their own purposes.
