On the one hand, this really sucks. I don’t think Luanti infringes on copyright (even Mineclonia is a bit of a stretch, they don’t own the idea of voxel games). On the other hand, it’s all the more reason to use F-Droid, Obtainium, and other third-party app stores!
Also what on Earth is Tracer(dot)ai???
Just automated bullshit to try and detect and DMCA “infringement” automatically.
I like this paragraph from Luanti’s blog post:
From this, we can gather that Tracer uses AI agents for automated infringement detection. In a 2024 blog post, the company boasts “85% faster takedowns”, “100% more reviews month-over-month” along with “review times that are six times faster than traditional methods”. It claims this has resulted in “44% more takedowns month-over-month”.
I like how Tracer’s highest concern here are number and speed of takedowns and not anything unnecessary like “not filing false claims”.
And yeah, Tracer AI is a “brand protection” AI service that appears to automatically file takedown notices on anything it deems to be infringing.
More like competitor buster than brand protection. I’m sure they are aware. It’s a masked service.
Oh for fuck’s sake…
In the article, they also mention that Microsoft filed a notice against Allumeria, another voxel sandbox game. Its steam page was temporarily removed because of that.
This isn’t just Google Play, this Tracer AI appears to be going against basically anything that looks remotely like Minecraft.
Well this sucks
Even if there was a straight up minecraft port on the luanti contentdb, that wouldn’t really warrant a DMCA takedown on the play store, it would warrant getting that specific game removed from the contentdb…
it’s like taking down the youtube app rather than just claiming the actual infringing videos.
