“4DX”, “Infinity Vision”? What does it all mean?
These are all names for PLFs (Premium Large Formats) - that is, movie theaters with premium offerings that are considered higher quality than a standard movie theater. These are all posters advertising the premium formats consumers may want to experience Avengers: Doomsday in. The most popular PLF is IMAX, but Doomsday isn’t releasing in IMAX because Dune: Part Three got the reservation first. Here’s what all the PLFs mean:
- Infinity Vision - Disney’s exclusive branding for theaters that meet the requirements. To quality, the theater needs to have a screen that is at least 45 feet (14 meters) wide, a minimum of 7.1 surround sound, and a minimum level of screen brightness (usually 14 footlamberts). Theaters branded with the Infinity Vision label are guaranteed to at least have those three requirements.
- HDR by Barco - A type of projection technology that provides HDR (High Dynamic Range), which offers a wider color spectrum than SDR. If you want to experience HDR at home, you can buy 4K Blu-rays.
- ScreenX - A panoramic film format that also projects the movie on the theater walls, extending the screen to 270 degrees.
- 4DX - The movie is played in 4D (motion seats, wind, strobe lights, water spraying, scents, etc.) This is more like a theme park ride than an actual cinematic experience.
- Dolby Cinema - The single best movie theater experience you can get today. Has 4K Dolby Vision HDR projection, Dolby Atmos surround sound, and comfy recliner seats.
- RealD 3D - The exact same as a regular theater, but you wear 3D glasses. This is subjective and depends on whether you like 3D movies or not.
- Fandango is NOT a PLF, it is an online service where you can buy movie tickets. They like to have their own custom posters made for some reason.
What PLF should I choose? Which one is the best?
Dolby Cinema is hands down the best PLF available, and sometimes it can be better than IMAX. RealD 3D is pretty good too, if you like 3D movies. If you don’t know which one to choose, go with Infinity Vision. I’ve never tried HDR by Barco, but I hear it’s alright. Avoid 4DX and ScreenX, they are gimmicks.
