As cheers_queer has experienced, “flood” means something specific in insurance. It’s wise for everyone to check your specific policies (even if you’re not currently experiencing water in your home). Water that comes up from your pipes/sewer, fresh water that enters your home over land, and salt water can be referred to and covered (or not covered) separately, depending on your specific policy.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canadian director refused to work on new Harry Potter show over 'transphobia'
101·5 days agoGood for Pankiw and Herron. I hope more people while rejected roles in any side of the camera speak up.
It’s disappointing how many high profile people have signed on to this project. I understand that the story was integral to many people’s lives (myself included) and, yes, the career opportunity is huge, I’m sure the pay is good… But there’s a very direct line from these jobs to harming innocent people.
I quit my job boss was lying and enriching himself, but at least he wasn’t really directly harming people. Without exaggeration, I think nothing would make Rowling happier than if trans ladies were killed or killed themselves because of her influence. How can people support that? It’s a moral bankruptcy.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Private clinic Grifols says it's pausing all plasma collection in Canada
8·6 days ago“Unfounded attention”, says the company that “was issued a non-compliance rating at one of its Winnipeg sites” and because a Health Canada inspection found they “did not carry out sufficient corrective and preventive actions when required.”.
The fact they will take plasma twice a week from a person compared to Canadian Blood Services’ once every two weeks tells me enough of their care and concern for those selling plasma.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Critics slam Tim Hortons Harry Potter promotion as un-Canadian, anti-trans (CBC)
13·22 days agoYou’re just telling on yourself that you just don’t care where your money goes. And, you know what, that’s your call to make. But what I don’t understand is why bother attacking people who choose differently than you? Why do you care what random internet people you don’t even know think of you? Who would even know how you choose to spend your dollars if you didn’t say anything?
If you don’t care where your dollars go, just own it. “I’ve got too many other more immediate things in my life to worry about.” Okay, then. Fine. Just own it, and stop being so insecure about it. If you’re right, then you’re right.
“You’re not perfect, so don’t even try” is an incredibly childish and immature stance to take. That’s like saying no one should ever try or learn anything new because they’re not masters of it immediately. I mean, if that’s the attitude you have, why should you even bother anything ever? What is the point of your life if you’re not the best or perfect at everything? You may as well just go and die already.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canadian prime minister Mark Carney is not the climate guy you thought | Seth Klein
9·3 months agoDid anyone ever think he was a climate guy? He was voted for mostly being neither Trudeau nor Poilievre. It’s been a big positive otherwise that he’s a true statesman, but I can’t imagine what would have made anyone think he was a climate guy.

science@lemmy.world•Some Countries Embrace Lab-Grown Meat While Others Move Toward BansEnglish
2·3 months agoThe other day I went out for lunch with a friend and some acquaintances. One guy ordered a burger, and then he went on for a little time about how is it possible there are enough cows for everyone to have a burger? How many burgers can you get from a cow? Where are all these cows coming from??
So I said it’s factory farming, these cows are produced for the sake of their meat. A cow is huge, a quarter cow is enough meat to feed a family for a whole year. I don’t think this guy was being purposefully obtuse, because I don’t know him to have that kind of personality, so the only remaining explanation is he really is that ignorant/stupid. In this age, we have lots of people who don’t care, or wilfully turn their eye from it. But to not know?

Canada@lemmy.ca•You can force parliament to pass one piece of legislation right now. What do you make them pass?
1·4 months agoTruly, I don’t understand how this isn’t a thing already, it’s so basic. In any other context, a large investor in a private company acquires a share of it. In Canada, if the large investor is the government, its a gift?? Wtf??? I’d even be okay to, say, build on some clauses that the government buys shares at a higher price, or needs to divest at X time, first right to buy back, etc., if people are afraid of the government literally taking over everything.
Or even simple clauses, like CEO take a pay cut, no bonuses, etc. But this business of privatizing gains and socializing losses only helps the ultra wealthy hoard wealth at the expense of everyone else. It’s incredibly immoral to take bailouts, then give bonuses and even fire workers.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why are people speculating that the most recent Trump assassination attempt was fake?

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why are people speculating that the most recent Trump assassination attempt was fake?
5·4 months agoI’m a fairly reasonable, educated (masters), Millennial (i.e., have some life experience). I think it could be a false flag conspiracy. The fact that I think it’s possibly credible that the current president of the USA could have arranged (or, rather, he had it arranged) a fake threat on his life is an indication that the office is the president and the US government around it has no credibility. The lies every day that sometimes contradict not only actual evidence, but what their own offices said just the day or days before. Not to say anything of the moral bankruptcy and corruption on display every day.
If it’s real (and I’m not saying it is, only that it is not outside the realm of credibility, given what we’ve seen), there are many die-hard Trumpers who, essentially, worship him. The images of him being embraced by Jesus and then as Jesus were not the end of him, were they? We only need to consider J6 where people expected to take a took a day off work, overthrow the government and maybe kill some Democrats, and then what? Return to work the next Day? They expected Trump to be installed as president and face no consequences.
More recently, look at ICE. Pro-Trump “irregular immigrants” still expect Trump to personally exempt, protect, and pardon them.
Trump has and does pardon true and real criminals. If I were a Trump worshipper, and told he personally asked me to do this, and he would use his power to protect me, I would probably to it. Only I’m not a delusional Trump worshiper.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•The incredible transformation
25·4 months agoI understand where you’re coming from, and it wouldn’t apply in this specific context (where locals had rejected the poor boy), but in a general sense, the idea is to partner or invest in such a way to enable locals to lead the change efforts, or at least have a significant stake and voice.
In the business world, there are often silent investors who back entrepreneurs. Their financial input make a business possible, but leave the operations to the entrepreneur. The investor backs the entrepreneur, and they both profit.
It’s a different model and it takes more time and effort to find local partners to build up their capacity over time, but enabling locals will get stronger long-term results for the recipients of charity. It’s the difference between providing food packages to people and giving people agricultural tools to provide food for themselves in the long run. Obviously, in a situation of dire need, providing food is an immediate need, but only providing food instead of also providing tools keeps the recipients in a dependent situation. If they’re dependent on foreign charity forever, it’s just another form of control and colonialism.
What this woman had done, by caring for this poor boy, was long-term investing in him. Now he has an education and will be able to work and care for himself.

2·5 months agoKanopy (video only) and Hoopla (multimedia) are two papers widely used in Canada and the US. There are other and international providers, but I don’t remember them off the top of my head.
Ofcourse, they don’t have the same content as the big streaming companies, licenses and all, but there’s plenty to be enjoyed if you’re not keeping up with the latest streaming shows anyway. (I watch TV shows on the broadcaster website the day after they air on TV.)

2·5 months agoNot all trans people are transitioned on hormones, so I guess a relevant question is Are trans athletes required to have been on HRT +testosterone blockers for a minimum time in order to compete in sports? At what level of competition would that be required? How and by whom is that monitored? Is it even possible to monitor if, say, an athlete reduces their T blockers?
