Yeah I’m a nurse and this article tracks. I get callbacks on applications within a week of submission or sometimes same day. Are they good jobs? Maybe. But there’s no shortage of them.

But this article also highlights something I’ve always said about cops, whose degrees are basically worthless according to this article. A degree isn’t necessary for their job while it’s literally illegal for me to not have one as well as a license that can be revoked if I fuck up bad enough.

Cops imo have a similar level of responsibility if not for health specifically definitely for safety. They should have to be licensed and that license should be overseen by a public safety board that can remove it. You should be able to maybe get a 3-6 month certificate or something to ticket people for parking in handicapped spots or noise disturbances but you should need at LEAST an associates to carry a gun in the protection of public safety, preferably a bachelors and in addition to martial arts it should cover everything from law, basic / developmental psych, basic first aid and how to identify when a disturbance is probably being caused by a medical problem that needs eval after it’s been safely contained etc.

I do actually believe there is a need for public safety officials who can show up and stop people from injuring each other but we really need to up our expectations for ethics and competency.

I had been wondering lately if using the fossil fuels in space instead of on earth isn’t a viable option. It’s like a billion years of sunlight trapped inside the earth’s crust that’s all gotta go somewhere eventually anyway right? As long as it’s not fucking shit up in the atmosphere it could be a lot of use elsewhere maybe?

We have a lil backpack for our dog that I put snacks in when we go to the corner store and people always ask if she’s a service animal and I don’t really consider her one because

a) she is not well behaved enough, she panics in the wrong environment and tries to bolt (she’s 0% fight 100% flight and sometimes that’s actually fine like if you take her on the bus she hides under the seat the entire time which is what she needs to do anyway)

b) I don’t know that me being too lazy to carry my own candy bars really qualifies as a service dog task

So I kinda wanna get her this for the backpack but technically the backpack itself is her job so…

(Our family Halloween costume is filling the backpack with candy and hubs and I have shirts that say "emotional support human, do not pet).

this is giving me flashbacks to the IV simulator in nursing school. I had already been a phlebotomist by that point so I was just like yeah this feels nothing like a real vein. Did help me learn the order of the steps though. Like practicing pushing the catheter down the length of the needle one handed and all. Then I went straight into psychiatry where basically no unit allows even a disconnected IV without a 1:1 and have put in like 5 IVs total in the entire time I’ve been employed as a nurse which is still well over half my attempts but still.

Interestingly one of the few times I ever got pulled over was when I was on my way back from helping someone with yardwork and had my hair bundled up in a scarf so it didn’t get nasty. It was so weird the cop actually apologized for pulling me over then drove off really suddenly. I definitely grew up in one of ‘those’ areas so I think he really did pull me over and was like ‘wait shit you’re white abort ABORT’ which is so funny because like. I just do what works culture means very little to me.

This reminds me of a book I read recently. I get like 30 $1 paperbacks at the library used book sale every spring / fall. When I’m done reading them they go on the unit book cart for the patients unless theyre wildly objectionable (and it takes a lot for me, I recently put out some only mildly tasteful furry badger shapeshifter smut).

Anyway this year I got something called “the king’s hounds” where the back summary sounded lit but it turned out to be super rapey (like Sean Connery bond just keep doing it until they shut up rapey). And it’s been sitting on my coffee table collecting dust since I finished it because it feels wrong to just throw it away but I’m definitely not giving it to my patients (who like, ALL have rape PTSD for some reason). I probably will wind up throwing it out but. Fuck. It just feels wrong to destroy a book for some reason even though that’s probably the only thing to do.
