You should not engage in a discussion in order to convince someone to change their mind, but if you do so, and you do it in a public forum, then you ought to understand the mind you’re changing is very rarely that of the person youre interacting with, but that of onlookers.
Finally, not everything is about some robotic desire to advance an ideological cause. Its pretty reasonable for people to react negatively, when you behave negatively.
