  • The only way that they should ever stop being able to federate would be if the Lemmy or Piefed devs decided to make the software intentionally closed off instead, which seems very unlikely.

There are often some mild issues any time two different federated instances running on different software interact, just by virtue of the fact they have different features. For example, Piefed has an events post category that I don’t think Lemmy does, but the devs account for this and it just shows up as a normal post for Lemmy users.

  • His story has been absolutely whitewashed in a lot of media by people who want to glorify his actions, I haven’t been there in years but I remember Reddit being particularly bad for it. Which is part of why I bring up that he was an absolute jackass who caused all his own problems, a lot of people who do know the story don’t know it’s been misrepresented.

    On his Wikipedia page:

City officials told Heemeyer that putting in a septic tank was a less expensive alternative, but he rejected both options and said that the government not paying for the sewage line hookup was “extortion by government fiat”. Despite these setbacks, he did not withdraw his annexation request and subsequently became part of the sewer district.

In June 2001, Joe Docheff made Heemeyer an offer over the phone whereby if Heemeyer dropped the lawsuit, they would provide him an easement to connect a sewer line to the new concrete plant free of charge; Heemeyer simply hung up. Around this time, the buried concrete truck barrel that served as Heemeyer’s sewage hole filled up. Heemeyer responded by pumping his sewage with a gasoline pump into the irrigation ditch that ran behind his property.[8] Heemeyer also attempted to illegally connect to a neighbor’s sewer line, but was caught and the incident reported to the sanitation district. At this point, the sewer district started enforcing the legal requirement to have a sewer hookup or a septic tank and fined Heemeyer $2,500 (equivalent to $4,439 in 2024) for it and other city code violations at his business,[12] in July 2001, nine years after he was required to have installed either.

    Dude was a jackass.

Do they still call them ‘girl/boy’ toys? They did when I was a kid (which led to a lot of grief when I didn’t want the ‘girl’ toy), but I feel like around the mid ‘10s I heard they were starting to call them by whatever brand they were (ex: Barbie or Transformers toy). But I haven’t bought a kids meal in at least 15 years so I couldn’t tell you how much they still do that.

Personally not a fan of people acting like urban = queer paradise when the city closest to me has had some pretty significant increases in anti-LGBTQ hate crimes:

LACo Reports 2025 Is the Second-Highest for Hate Crimes in 44 Years [highest = 2024]

There were 102 anti-transgender crimes, the largest number ever documented in this report. A staggering 95% of these crimes were violent

Hate crimes targeting non-binary people sharply increased 275% from 4 to 15, higher than 2023, when we began tracking this targeted group

72% of crimes motivated by sexual orientation targeted gay men. This was the second-largest number ever documented for this motivation

But yeah, only rural bad or something.

I used LibreOffice Writer for my coursework the past semester, and when I used my spouse’s Windows computer to double check the images were correctly placed before submitting a paper they were on completely different pages. This was when I saved it as a .docx, because the only two options accepted were .docx or pdf. I wound up doing everything as a pdf if I needed images, but I think LibreOffice doesn’t have a save as pdf option? Or if it did I missed it, I just used Google Docs to save it as a pdf.

  • My computer wasn’t compatible with Windows 11, and it’s not that old, dammit. The thought of throwing it out because of some arbitrary push for Windows 11 from Microsoft made me angry, so I finally installed Mint since it’s the one I kept hearing is easiest for people who don’t know anything about Linux. I’ve been using it almost 3 months now and I don’t find it difficult to deal with at all, and the games I play work on it. The biggest hurdle has been compatibility with some school stuff, but I’ve been able to use LibreOffice and Google Docs when all else fails.

Computers aren’t my hobby, running into errors when I just want to get shit done pisses me off. I’ve been dealing with a minimal amount of that on Mint, I imagine mostly because I’m not tinkering with a ton under the hood (mostly aesthetic changes so that it looks how I like). If you have basic troubleshooting skills for Windows then a lot of that transfers to Linux, even though the actual solutions will be different.

If something better than Mint came along I’d probably switch to it, but I don’t know what that would look like, since Mint is doing exactly what I want: running my programs and not popping up with a ton of useless AI crap or ads.
