I just took a poll and Canada has agreed to accept France, Italy, and Spain in exchange for the current neighbours to the south. Please let me know when to expect delivery, hopefully station security takes an early lunch.

Always funny to look these routes up. 500km, six hour drive in a car or two hour trip in a Shinkansen. In the west, this would be the other way around.
Hopefully they find more use for this once it gets going to get it beyond one trip a day. It would be interesting if they reach enough demand to run it around the clock.

I didn’t really consider the reason the company gave for the dismissal. Though it occurs to me now that any incident where someone loses their job due to donating food nearing expiry could be plausibly written up as thievery by the company doing the firing.
Which is a nuance that might be worth chatting to a lawyer about.

Joe should see a lawyer about a wrongful termination lawsuit.
The Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act (pdf) brought to law in 1996 shields most liability for people donating food exactly like he did.
This may have been a knee-jerk reaction from the employer incorrectly assuming they could be liable if someone got sick. Though its also possible they’ve been looking for a reason to dismiss a long time employee to replace him with a cheaper one. Corporate ownership makes me leans towards the latter.
Similarly, I use company equipment to pick up the larger amounts of trash or furniture items.
A commercial vehicle backed into a ditch has had the side effect of attracting a few police from time to time, but it’s never been any trouble. No clue if it helps the business in terms of image, but it sure helps me feel better.
Generally just gloves since most of what I come across is either too small or too large for a picker. They’re also not too useful when there’s a lot to be picked up. Tends to be faster to use a shovel sometimes.
While not really a volunteer position, I do spend a chunk of my free time picking up litter in my area. From snack wrappers to cigarette butts to midnight ditch tips, I’ve done it all.

Reminds me of Tom Mullica, he would have loved a cigarette cannoli!

That’s atrocious. Since you’re there, would the 1,000 foot injunction against enforcement give you some peace of mind? I feel like I would be nervous even crossing through that line. I’m sorry you have to navigate that.

I wish them luck. A 30% drop in attendance is massive, especially if their funding is tied up with it, which is often the case. Hopefully this lawsuit doesn’t draw more ‘enforcement’ to these schools.
Unrelated but, that podium means business.

Honestly, why the cyclist didn’t turn into a concrete bollard upon impact is incomprehensible.

I can’t disagree. The only painted lanes I’ve ridden in that felt safe were between the parking row and the curb. Even then, safety is contextual as now the main concern is getting door’ed.
If only we had some red shells to ride around with.

All these laws being drafted, lanes being made and unmade, resources diminished, and hardly ever does it result in the decision being made by logic opposed to some political gut instinct. Most the time they don’t even take a measurement of traffic modalities, and even when they do, the numbers just get ignored.
We’ve all seen the picture comparing people density in cars v buses v bikes. It’s obvious which one takes up the most space per person. Oh how I wish politics wasn’t dominated by narcissistic imbeciles.
Don’t forget morfans!

The question that comes to mind is how soon will tear gas be used with the ‘looked like a gun’ excuse shortly thereafter.

Theoretically whatever the jury decides goes, and there isn’t really a way to make them not consider information they learned inside or outside of the courtroom. They can be instructed not to weigh their decision on things they see and here, but some bells ring too loud to be unrung.
As far as specific legality goes? If no one’s in the forest, does the falling tree make noise?

It’s impossible to know whether this tragedy could have been prevented if the bike lanes were still there.
It is possible to extrapolate though. While it looks like the bike lanes were only paint, they did provide a wider space to ride in since they replaced a driving lane. Of course this was all undone when drivers got upset. I hope those people are found and interviewed now that these deaths have occurred.
What makes this worse is that she was riding with her whole family, and they had to witness it.

“I’m proud that this agency is not only returning full back pay, but is recovering damages and penalties to send a strong message that cheating workers will not be tolerated.” - Sam Levine, Consumer and Worker Protection Commissioner.
It’s remarkable the fine recoups the amount stolen, and not just a small percentage. It shouldn’t be so surprising of course, but I am happy for these workers.

I’ve seen videos of the indiscriminate use of tear gas on a large crowd that was clearly peaceful and filled with Portlanders of all ages, and well off the macadam facility. We banned tear gas for a reason. I join Councilor Green in calling for enforcement of our laws. - Jamie Dunphy, Portland City Councillor
I hope they are able to enforce it but when a group can murder with impunity in broad daylight, it might be a challenge to stop lesser acts.
Am I reading correctly that this was reopened for car traffic in the last week of the former mayor’s term? Sure would be nice if outgoing politicians couldn’t start flipping the furniture once they’ve lost re-election.
