  • I wish they had left the 32nd century as a “Discovery - only”. After the jump to the future it felt like the show had no stakes. Everything felt disconnected.

It feels like an easy excuse for the writers to pull just about anything out of their asses, “because it has been so long” and “tech has evolved exponentially”.

SNW proved that there was a lot more to explore even in the 23rd century. So much could have been done with the fallout of the Dominion War in the 24th.

But it’s all up to the writers. If they’re good the show can be good.

  • Yes and no.

Those of us who have always seen them as desperately needed guardians of workers’ rights have been proven to be right, but the masses who have bought the right wing lies see the unions as just standing in the way of economic growth. The corporate owned media spews these lies non-stop, so the uninformed may easily fall for them.

The proposed shittification of working conditions is on an unprecedented level. One would have to be a fool to think this would serve any workers, it is all just to give more power to the employers and severely limit the worker’s right to protest.

Our country used to stand out in working together to find a common ground and compromises in difficult political questions. Now the country has become more and more divided into left and right. And compromises are off the table, the corporate-backed right is going for a crushing victory which would poison the political field for who knows how long.

    This future looks bleak.

  • Our unions have been losing members steadily over the years, the younger people don’t anymore see the advantages that the membership brings. The corporations have been publicly defaming the unions for a long time, blaming them for serving only the union leaders. And since the unions had already fought and won most of the important rights for the workers decades ago, it looked like the unions had made themselves obsolete.

The corporations also founded a “general unemployment fund”, so that you could get the same unemployment advantages without joining a union and paying for the membership. This fund has been gaining more and more members since many of the younger people don’t see the the value of joining the unions, believing the ongoing discredit campaign of the right wing lobby.

The current goverment coalition is just about the only one bold enough to try run this legislation through. The prime minister party “Kokoomus” will do anything the corporate lobby desires, the “Finns Party” is a power drunk protest coalition with a primary objective of keeping immigrants out - and if possible, sending the ones already here away. They’ll agree to anything if they can just keep the borders closed and “owning the libs”, even if this means fucking up their own voters’ interests. The Swedish Party will agree to almost anything if they can keep the mandatory Swedish language in the national curriculum. And the Christian Party just want to keep religion in schools and oppose anything even remotely liberal, anything else goes for them.

  • I collect movies that I know to be good. I’ve been a true film freak for over 35 years and I’ve learned how to find “my thing” from the vast market with the help from my friends, reviews and forums. Or when I see a truly good one at a theatre, it goes to my buy list and it might take years for it to come my way.

I have never bought a movie just because of the covers, this has actually never even occurred to me. I did rent films this way back in the day, but I only buy stuff I know.

Nowadays I rarely find anything I haven’t already seen before, but just few weeks ago I came by a modern classic that I was unable to see in a proper theatre. I save these specialties to watch with a projector and a good sound system, hopefully in a few weeks I’ll find the time…

  • Your description fits my brother perfectly.

He has very little curiosity, hasn’t read more than 3 books in his entire life, strongly dislikes all forms of art (except shitty movies and TV-shows), isn’t capable of analytical or critical thinking and hasn’t got a clue how the political system works.

He apes the attitudes of his spouse and friends, so much that I’m not sure he even has any opinions of his own.

Yet this doesn’t bother him at all. He’s very happy being oblivious and he makes more than twice as much money per month than I do with my master’s degree. He is very good at what he does and I’m happy for him.

It would still be nice to be able to have a real conversation with him, instead of just stating the factual matters or laughing at some dumb jokes. If we both didn’t share such a strong resemblance of our dad I’d assume that my mom had an affair, beyond our appearance we have almost nothing else in common.

  • Predators do what predators do.

I had two cats from the same litter. The female was superfocused on birds, rarely paid any attention to mice or voles which are pretty abundant here in the countryside. She very rarely managed to catch any birds in the wild, but if one made the mistake of flying into the house, it was game over in seconds. She could jump surprisingly high.

The male on the other hand was only interested in rodents. It was like to him birds didn’t exist. For yeard he kept our house totally free from mice, roaming the yard and doing his thing very effectively. I’d pay good money to have a cat like him again.

I wouldn’t let my cats out in the city, but out here I’ll let them live by their insticts. The nearby highway kills a lot more birds and mammals daily than they ever could.

Few days ago I was talking with my wife about groceries, reminded her about buying more cat food. My daughter was sitting next to me, playing some game on her Android phone. Then she chirped “I got a cat food ad! I’ve never gotten a cat food ad before, ever! It’s like the phone heard what you just said, dad!”

Yep. VPN and Adguard are now installed to every single mobile device in my household.

  • One definitely should use solid structures, metal or wooden. The damned thing cost ~10$ and I didn’t have time to build a proper support structure at the moment. I meant to use it only as a temporary solution, which I forgot when everything was fine.

The design of the arch itself wasn’t the problem. The interconnecting pipes were only 1-2mm thick, so there was no way it could possibly support the weight of a flourishing grape vine.

It was marketed as a “rose arch”. I guess it could’ve handled this purpose without any problems.

Buy wrong stuff, suffer the consequences.

  • Same thing in my country. The percentage of union members has been in steady decline for years, mostly due to years of right-wing paid propaganda that has had an alarmingly great effect on the younger generations.

Another reason is that since the unions did such great work in the years after WWII, the working conditions in most workplaces are pretty damn good. Therefore many assume that “union membership is useless for me, why should I pay anything for something I already have?”

The unions are slowly losing their power to defend the workers due to this idiocy. Many of the unions have been poorly managed and haven’t done their work defending the workers as efficiently as they should have, this cannot be denied.

Right now our right-wing government is planning new labour laws that would break the peace between the unions and employers that has lasted for decades. A peace that has brought us such prosperity our grandparents couldn’t even dream of.

But no, the rich just must have more and more.
